    Beer turning out to dark

It was a 7-gallon batch; enough to fill my 36 24-oz bottles.

    Elbow grease :-(

There are few things higher on my list of "THINGS THAT SUCK" than cleaning up after a boil over, ugh... :smack:

    Beer turning out to dark

My Hefe (7 gal) was 8 lbs of wheat malt and 4 lbs of Pilsener malt, whole German Hallertau hops for bittering; my Czech Pilsener (5 gal) was 10 lbs Pilsener, 2 oz Munich, and 8 oz Carapils, Czech Saaz hops throughout the boil. My water is local bottled water, should I check the alkalinity?

    Beer turning out to dark

Greetings All, I'm a long time brewer, I've been running across a problem lately that I'd like to try to get some help on. I've been brewing some of the lighter styles (referring to color) lately, and these beers typically come out a lot darker than I have been expecting. I did a...

I have ProMash on my computer (as far as I know they don't make an app) and I have BeerSmith 2 on my phone and tablet, plus there are tons of online gadgets/calculators/recipators. I prefer ProMash by a landslide, I've been using for over 15 years now.

My brewing software (ProMash) gave me the 4.4 oz of corn sugar for the carbonation level; I took the 4.4 oz and diluted it in a 5-gallon "wort" and got 1.003 as my gravity. That's the gravity added to your finished beer by the sugar, so I just subtracted the 0.003 (gravity from the sugar) from...

What Sanitisers and Cleaners are used.

Are all cleaners equal, and are all sanitizers equal? Or should I be using different cleaners/sanitizers for different jobs? Are some considered "better" than others or is it a matter of personal preference?

I'm assuming this is a 5-gallon batch; if your carbonation level is 2.5, that's about 4.4 oz of corn sugar you should have added. But- 4.4 oz of corn sugar added to a 5-gal batch would only have increased the gravity of the beer by 0.003; this would make your "true" final gravity 1.023 (assuming...

UPDATE- For those interested, I think I've pretty much nailed this; the beer is now fermented (6.5% abv, nice ruby color) and I've been experimenting with extracts for the orange, ginger, and cinnamon aromas and flavors. I got myself a 1 ml pipette and started dosing low-hopped 12-oz bottles of...

    Hops utilization with bags?

I only use whole hops, and I loosely back them in cheesecloth bags. Looks to me like I'm getting plenty of flow through the bags. I typically give the bags a gentle squeeze at the end of the boil to recover some of my liquid gold. :)

    White Labs WLP565, Belgian Saison

I accidentally added twice the amount of bitter orange peel than the recipe called for; I managed to fish some of it out but it was still about 50% over. It's getting very high marks, I may keep it that way in the future.

    Hops utilization with bags?

Sorry, the quote was from the post where I found my answer, i was asked to post it to this thread.

    Hops utilization with bags?

"The rule of thumb is a 10% reduction in utilization. So not a huge difference either way." Mea culpa.

    Hops utilization with bags?

Disregard, I found the answer elsewhere in the forum. HBT rocks!!

    Hops utilization with bags?

Hi all, I'm about to brew and I've decided to use cheesecloth bags to contain my whole hops during the boil; the bags are loosely packed. Will this affect the hop utilization? If so, any idea as to the percent I should add to correct? Thanks for all responses. CK

    Stainless conical fermenters

Hi All, I'm thinking about treating myself to a stainless conical fermenter and I'd like to know if anyone has any recommendations; I already have a pretty decent homebrew setup (10 gallon fully fitted brew kettle, all grain setup, grain storage bins, 2-line keggerator draft system, temp...
