How long did it take for you to brew a batch you REALLY liked?

Answer: 3rd brew. Reasons: Fermentation chamber to control temperatures and it was also the first time I did a yeast starter. The beer is awesome, or at least I'm very happy with it. I can't imagine trying to brew without a ferm chamber and a yeast starter

Tasty beer in Rutland, VT area?

Hey All, My wife and I are traveling up to the Rutland, Vermont area for a long weekend to celebrate our 20 year anniversary. We've got our first winter of home brewing under out belts and it's peaked her interest in beer. We'd like to visit a couple brewery/pubs while up there. We're...

    Been brewing for 19 years???

Hope you guys won't mind if a newbie jumps in here...I started brewing in December. Like bajaedition points out, I was given the impression that making beer was an inexpensive hobby, and more importantly that it was fairly easy. Don't get me wrong, it seems one can make beer with a swamp...

is fizzy beer a result of over caronation?

Hi. Maybe it's a dumb question, but is homebrew that's fizzy a direct result of too much sugar at time of bottling, or are there other possible reasons? I made an Irish Ale kit from NB. It was in primary for 6 weeks. Bottle conditioned at a perfect 70° for two weeks then in a fridge for two...

    Hydro Farm Thermometer

Woke up this morning to the air lock being blown off carboy. Foam all over fermentor. No biggie, it's waterproof, but what a mess! I put on a blow off hose and this thing is really going. Fermometer says carboy and wort is currently 72 degrees (it's 66 inside chamber). Will just have to...

    Hydro Farm Thermometer

Hi Guys, I just brewed my second batch ever (NB's Caribou Slobber) and I put it into my fermentation chamber I built. The chamber has a Hydro Farm Thermostat and a heat mat for it's temperature control (doesn't have any refrigeration mechanisms, just heat mat, because my house is around 64...

mouse smell on copper wort chiller

Update: I soaked the copper coil for 24 hours in a strong, but diluted 5% vinegar solution and then boiled it as outlined above. It looks darn near brand new and smells clean as a whistle...SWMBO no longer can smell a trace of mouse! So, if anyone is still tracking this thread that gave...

mouse smell on copper wort chiller

Ok, I've got the coil soaking in a strong white vinegar solution.... I will boil after and see if SWMBO can smell anything. I mention this because she's the one that caught it in the first place. I knew the mouse had died on it, but she didn't. So, I unpacked the box of stuff from my friend...

Thank you for all your responses! I will try first to salvage this coil with the steps outline above - and if that doesn't work I'll head to Home Depot.

mouse smell on copper wort chiller

Hi All, First off, I'm a newbie. Just wanted to say that over the last 3 months I've read about a thousand threads as I've gone through the steps of making my first batch of home brew (Irish Red Ale from Northern Brewer). So, I just wanted to say thank you to all who post their knowledge, as...
