    Dry Hopping in Secondary

Just wanted to tack onto this in case anyone comes across it. I racked to the bottling bucket using with the bag over my siphon. It worked horribly at first. The siphon could not hold pressure and I kept getting all kinds of air. Suspecting that the bag was causing too much loss of...

    Dry Hopping in Secondary

Thanks guys. I have handful of bags and were going to use them but most advice I received was "oh with pellets don't worry about it, they just settle out". I am sure the fermentation is done, the only reason I haven't racked for bottling yet is because I’m hoping I come home one day and this...

    Dry Hopping in Secondary

I racked my IPA to a secondary and dry hopped 3oz of pellets. It has been in the secondary for almost 2 weeks now. Since the second day there has been a quarter inch green layer on top of the brew which I assumed was the dissolved pellets floating. I was under the assumption that these would...

    Batch in bottles

Just finished bottling my first batch. Ended up with 38 bottles and a 2L growler. Pretty excited to try it. The samples tasted great. She started out a little heavy at 1.062 but settled out at 1.016. This puts her a bit over 6% ABV. The samples had good malt flavor and a surprising...

    Urge

All right you inspiring SOBs......I'm ordering ingredients tonight. Just bottled the brown ale and have too much empty equipment hanging around.

    Urge

Well……both of my first two batches (Big River Brown Ale & Ferocious IPA) are now just relaxin in their secondary at a breezy fo’ sheezy 66 degrees. After all of the activity taking place over the last few weeks, I have an itch. I’m sort of fighting the urge to...

Carboy bung keep working its way out

This was happening to me last week. I wiped the bung and the top of the neck clean with vodka and gave it a few seconds to dry. Worked great. Hasn't moved since.

    Starsan Shelf Life

Right. It wasn't the number so much as the "above" comment. In relation to 3ph, and given that it is an acidic solution, an acceptable situation should be on the acidic side of the number which would be "below" 3. I was just confirming that the comment was the excusive statement meaning...

    Volume left behind

I could understand that with custom recipes where you could increase ingredients but can you just add a gallon of water to an extract kit meant for 5 gallons?

    Volume left behind

Ya, there is some in there. I figure you cant stop it al but I'm talking about almost sucking up like 50% brew / 50% yeast cake. Guessing that's more trouble than the extra bottle or two is worth. I dry hoped without a bag as well so I will already have some shmutz in my secondary anyway. I...

    Volume left behind

I boiled an IPA on 1-5-14 and it has been at 1.020 (OG1.075) for 3 days. I racked to secondary tonight and added 3oz (total) of ahtanum, Amarillo, and citra for dry hopping. I am familiar with the whole secondary debate but as I have posted before, I want to try everything to gain experience and...

    Starsan Shelf Life

Its 1oz to 5 gal and 1 gallon is 20% of 5 gal. When you get into the really small Star San measurements I have had better luck converting to tsp. 6 tsp is 1 oz and 20% of 6 tsp is 1.2 tsp. So a heaping tsp for 1 gal should get you there. Anyone feel free to correct my math. I've been...

    Starsan Shelf Life

Meaning above 3ph is NOT effective, right? Low PH is acidic.

    Starsan Shelf Life

That's right. Didn't even register that its an acidic sanitizer. I can't seem to find confirmation on the five start site (found msds and tech sheet but didn't see it on either) however it appears others have. The consensus seems to be below 3.5. Thanks guys.

    Starsan Shelf Life

So I got tired of making big batches of Starsan so I did the math and figured the mix for a 26.5 oz spray bottle. Do we have any idea what the shelf life is? How long can I keep a mix in a spray bottle and expect it to be effective? Thanks

How in the heck do I prevent boil over?

This, for me. Granted I have a whopping two boils under my belt but a boil over on the first hop addition was my only real issue. I just added them more slowly on the second batch and every time since. Seems to work fine.

    First Batch

Thanks. This is good info. I did take gravity readings on day 6 and day 7 and there was no change. In hindsight I guess the fermentation is pretty slow at that point if its present so Ill stretch the time out between readings next time. I did read A TON on the secondary debate but...

    First Batch

Hey All - New to the forum and did a lot of reading on here as I prepared so I just wanted to post a quick thank you and an update on the progress. Seems like its going pretty well. I did 5 gallon batch with a Big River Brown Ale extract kit from Midwest. The boil went according to plan...
