Are cheapo wine kits much different than expensive ones?

I wish wine kit manufacturers would list how much pure juice, how much juice from concentrate, how much concentrate, and how much TDS are in their kits. A 16 L kit could conceivably contain only 0.1 L of pure varietal juice. How are we to know if it contains more than this or not? There are...

    Welch's Concord Grape Juice Wine

My second year making wine from the Concord grapes in my backyard. Very distinctive wine, but not deserving of the bad rap. Last year (2013) I chaptalized a fair bit, and heavily oaked it. The plan is to age it for over 2 years, but there are only 6 bottles of the original 28 remaining, and...

Are cheapo wine kits much different than expensive ones?

So I've made country fruit wines, concord grape wines (from fresh fruit from the backyard), and cheap-to-midrange wine kits. I've never splurged on the top-of-the-line kits. I guess I'm a cheapskate. But now, as I am trying and failing to get exact info on how much concentrate versus real juice...

Making Traditional rice Wine. Cheap, Fun, and Different

I bought koji a year ago but haven't made my Sake yet. How long does Koji last in the fridge before it dies?

    What are you drinking now?

Coopers Pilsner tweaked with crystal malt (can't remember how much) and Saaz hops. Left WAY too long to lager (6 months?) but it didn't go bad.

    Expensive vs inexpensive wines

Anyone interested in reopening this thread? I've been making wine kits for years, as well as blackberry wine from fruit. Two years ago I started making Concord wine from an amazing vine in the backyard. I used to think my country fruit wines were "inferior" to commercial grape wines, because...

Flat[ish] Coopers Stout tastes like Guiness

Interesting discovery right now. I've had a cold for the past week, and finally felt good enough to have a pint tonight. I discovered a half full 2 litre pop bottle of a Cooper's stout kit I made a few months ago (650 gms Pale Malt extract, 300gms sugar, 300 gms molasses, 1 cup strong coffee)...

    Copper's English Bitter...how much sugar

I just made my first Cooper's English Bitter, with [egads!] 1 kilo of white sugar. Just drinking some right now, and it is a bit strong to be called a "session" beer. Really good balance of malt and [apparently, Styrian Goldings] hops. Next time I am going to make it with 1 kilo of crystal malt...

You know you're a home brewer when?

When you start constructing (in your mind) an elaborate hand pump system from your secondary fermenter in the basement up to your kitchen.

OG of Coopers Real Ale kit with 1 kilo white granulated sugar (beet sugar in Canada?)

Hi folks, I am an experienced winemaker and biodiesel brewer but have only made beer from Coopers kits thus far. I regularly forget to check OG. Is there a consistent OG for these kits when made with 1 kilo of regular granulated white sugar? Specifically, for the Real Ale kit? Thanks...
