    bottle size and uneven carbonation

I racked onto my priming solution, and bottled the big bottles first, but I did not stir. So it would be more likely that the big bottles had more sugar. That's a good catch, though - there could have been something else weird going on that kept the early bottles from getting as much. In the...

    cream ale recipe

I'm no expert on these things, but would flaked maize need to be mashed?

    bottle size and uneven carbonation

No hiss - get pretty much nothing when I open them. There's a combination of crown caps and fliptops, and I've tried 4 or 5, so I don't think it's a bad seal. I just read "a primer on priming" and figure that I slightly lowballed the priming sugar by a bit, but I should still have a solid 2...

    bottle size and uneven carbonation

I've had problems getting a batch to carbonate. It's a moderately strong brown ale (a little over 6%). So far it seems that 12 oz bottles and 11 oz fliptops have finished carbonating. My 22 oz bottles and 16 oz fliptops have all been flat - you can see a few bubbles, a hard pour results in no...

    advice on a recipe?

I'll post how it turns out, but I might not have a good comparison as I haven't brewed with Challenger. One part of the recipe I didn't think about is how much corn sugar I should use for priming. I suppose the style calls for lower carbonation - maybe about 3 oz?

    Smoothest Stout ever

Wait, so I can grab the oatmeal in my pantry, cook some up (maybe a big bowl so I have some breakfast too), and add it to the boil?? Sounds good. I assume you can't use as much this way, or else you'll end up underattenuating by too much. Maybe this is a good candidate to experiment with...

    Smoothest Stout ever

Someone mentioned adding oatmeal - can you actually do that when extract brewing? What kind do you use, and would you just steep it like other specialty grains?

    advice on a recipe?

Thanks for running that. I actually don't know how much I lose in the boil, but I was guessing about a half gallon, which gives me an OG around 1.042 when I use the Beer Recipator online. Maybe a little more extract would be a good hedge, especially if these hops turn out to be a bit rougher...

    advice on a recipe?

Ah, thanks. From what I've been able to find, they are all-purpose. The info out there is pretty vague, but I suppose they'll work for most English styles.

    Another MA brewer

MA is a great place for beer in general. I was sad that it would be too hard/expensive to get my favorite brews when I moved here from the west coast, but we do alright. For the record, I'm originally from out here (I was probably the only Pats fan living in Oakland at the time of the Tuck Rule...

    Full Boil Extract with Grain

Yeah, actually it takes me 20 minutes with a chiller, but I don't have a pre-chiller. I've wondered if I can coil the extra hose in the sink, in an ice bath, as a makeshift pre-chiller to improve chilling efficiency.

    advice on a recipe?

Hi - I'm new here, hoping to get some advice on the recipe for a bitter I'm planning. I'm using Phoenix hops for the first time (similar to Challenger, maybe 11% AA). I wasn't too sure about the ideal hop schedule - any ideas? Starting with 6G to get a 5G batch 6 lbs Maris Otter LME 0.5 lb...

    Another MA brewer

Getting ready to do another batch, hopefully this weekend. I'm a few brews in, and for now I'm sticking to extract, but I'm interested in doing some countertop partial mashing in a cooler or something. Gonna hit the forums now, maybe get some advice on my recipe.
