Looking for a Trade - Heady Topper - The Alchemist Vermont

http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/27039/16814 I have a friend who REALLY wants to try this beer. Looks like the distribution range is pretty limited. I live in Colorado and have access to many tasty things. If you are interested in working out a beer trade of Heady Topper for something I...

Bringing keg to party..pushing with Nitro?

We have one of those portable CO2 cartridges, works like a champ. Yes, the beer does need to be pre-carbonated, but you'll have no problem pushing a full 5 gallon keg on one cartridge. When we take kegs camping or fishing this is what we bring to push the beer.

    terrible tragedy

I feel your pain. We both brew, but my hubby brewed 10 gallons of Wit last summer with 5 going to a co-worker. He had it all down the in the basement, yeast pitched, perfect brew day. He was moving the second carboy into its fermentation place when he tapped it against a shelf. Must have hit the...

BJCP Category for a Blood Orange Hefe

If the orange comes through it's a 20(A) with the Hefe noted as the base style. If you don't get the orange at all, or get very little of it, putting it in regular Hefe 15(A) is appropriate as the prominent flavor/aroma of a regular Hefe should be banana/clove not orange. A tart citrus...

    Beer judge's comments

Are the ranks of the judges noted on the score sheets? I presume these were BJCP sanctioned competitions? Judges are supposed to include their e-mail on the judging form. Don't be hesitant to e-mail the judge directly asking for further discussion. As a National judge I can absolutely say the...

    Gluten-low brewing

It's not a true "gluten low / free" beer in the sense that it's brewed just like a regular beer but there is a ton of evidence that adding brewers' clarex manufactured by White Labs bursts the gluten protein and renders it unrecognizable to the systems of all except people with severe gluten...

TV Shows you've given up on.

First thing that comes to mind is House. I used to really like that show and I still record and watch it if time allows, but it's getting dangerously close to losing me completely. I too gave up on Fringe (bad time slot, missed a few episodes, and it just lost my attention). It's sad because I...

    Effects of High PH

If he's pre-boiling the water then he can boil the chlorine out. However, if you use chlorinated water in your mash it's too late to take care of the chlorine during the normal boiling process - by that point the chlorine has already bonded and will create chlorophenolics (band aid, medicinal...

Help me out with BJCP Exam style question

It is true for all of them. It's ok on the test to repeat yourself, just make sure you fill it in for each one. I advocate using the grid method that's discussed in BJCP for Dummies so you don't miss anything. There isn't necessarily something truly unique in the history/ingredient section of...

Help me out with BJCP Exam style question

My apologies, I misread your post and thought you said 60/70/80. :) Guess that's what happens when you read too fast. It's tough with the scottish because they are very similar. For the section you quoted if you say the following you should be good: 60 - focused on malt profile using less hops...

Help me out with BJCP Exam style question

National judge and exam grader here. First things first, the exam will never ask you to compare a 60/70/80. Have you looked at the exam study materials on the BJCP web site? Under the question you are referencing there is a lengthy table of groupings from which the three beers on the exams...

    Pumpkin Ale

Seeking those of you who have brewed delicious pumpkin ale. I'm getting ready to brew one this weekend. My primary question is that many of the recipes I am finding are stating to use canned 100% pumpking or whole fresh pumpkin and NOT canned "pumpkin pie." But there are no explainations given...

    Competition advice or thoughts

To get the most bang for your buck and beer sacrifice, find out what the respected competitions are before you enter. There are some competitions that the organizers go to great lengths to get lots of BJCP certified and up level judges, there are others that are a take what you can get kind of...

SWMBO moving in and so it begins

A woman's perspective to the OP, my husband and I brew together and are quite involved in it as a mutual hobby so we are fortunate not to have conflicts over where to store the equipment. Now we just fight over what to brew next. :) However, my guess is that she's thinking the beer in the...

Need help close to giving up :(

I'm BJCP National. I've offered my help in identifying what the off flavor is to others in the past. I would be more than happy to taste your beer if you wanted to send me 1 bottle from 2-3 of the infected batches. PM me if that's something you're interested in and I'll send you my address...

    3 roller monster mill help

By way of update, we resolved our problem with help from an engineer friend. Yes, the mill was going in the correct direction and it was squre. The problem appears to have been that we were not setting the gap spacing on the mill correctly. Apparently if the mill is not spaced correctly on both...
