    Hops in a Nylon bag

Home Depot Nylon Paint Strainers are the way to go. Much cheaper than buying hop bags themselves.

How do you guys get the lid off of your primary fermenter?

Oh they are, but if you screw them on real tight then you're going to be fighting with it to unscrew it as they always seem to tighten up during fermentation.

Ignore the Instructions,. Do not bottle after 5-10 days!!!!!!

I think a lot of people panic to bottle at <x> days because they are scared of sanitation or autolysis issues. I just leave mine till I have time to bottle. I stressed my yeast out on my last batch but left it in the fermenter for 3 weeks I think - had no off flavors. I firmly believe leaving...

How do you guys get the lid off of your primary fermenter?

You should try getting the lid off a Coopers fermenter!

Growing irritation at restaurants and bars

I go where I know theres beer that I'm in the mood for. The other night I went to a place that has a lot of microbrews on tap, and then last night I went to Applebees and had an ice cold Bud Lite :D I was just in the mood for it.

What steps of the brewing process annoy you to no end?

Filling bottles. I'd love to go to kegging but its just not practical for me right now.

How do you guys pitch your dry yeast?

I've done both sprinkling and rehydrating and I much prefer the short lag times in rehydrating.

Anyone know any good bourbon ale recipes

You may already be talking about it, but Northern Brewer does a Bourbon Barrell porter kit - extract or all grain.

How much idophor do you guys use?

Ah, of course :) I have the 4oz bottle.

How long to wait before I declare Wyeast packet dead

I made a thread on here about the exact same thing. Took 3 days before fermentation really got going. Turned out fine though and has all been drunk! Using dry yeast this time around with a 6 hour lag....much better for my nerves :)

    1st brew - I'm an idiot.

I once left the spigot open when pouring the wort in :)

How much idophor do you guys use?

I've read the correct amount for a capful is 2.5 gallons. The way I use it is to make it up in my fermenter per the above. Then immediately drain some off into a large bowl. This sanitizes the spigot in my fermenter (Coopers model) and allows me to sanitize other objects in the bowl. I then...

    Applebees is teh suck.

I'm not a huge fan of chains, and I try to eat at independently owned places as much as possible, but the Applebee's close to be is actually pretty good. Very friendly staff, and the food is generally pretty good for bar food. I think its very easy to label all chains with a good/bad brush...

Singing the praises of dry yeast

I just used US-05 for the first time. Rehydrated it, pitched, and much like korndog had lots of activity in 6 hours. Shortest lag time I've ever had with yeast (including liquid!).

TOFTT: The Start of a Totally F'd Up Beer

No offense to the OP but I'm always surprised at how complicated some people make their first batch. KISS is a great method to use when first brewing. You will get flustered easily and that leads to making silly mistakes. While making a kit and kilo no-boil batch won't produce award winning...

    Second brew ferementing?

Airlock activity is not reliable. As others have said, leave it for a few days then take a hydrometer reading. I once had a beer that fermented out in 3 days though. So I wouldn't worry until you take that hydro reading.

    How long in the fridge?

Depends how cold you want it :) I normally put mine in for about 6 hours.

    DME into cold water?

This is something I just thought about and couldn't find a clear answer on. The normal approach is to bring your water to a boil, remove from heat, and then add your DME. Normally this creates a lot of foam, and the steam makes the DME gum up around the packet/container. So I...

    Help for Better Extract Brewing

Really? I've never seen or heard this before. I would hope that buying from a good seller (NB, AHS etc) wouldn't mean you are getting junk just for getting dark extract.
