Spa Panel Wiring, help with ground

Trying to figure out how to wire my 220V spa panel and could use some help I'm going to be using the wiring from my stovetop which is only 3 wire (hot hot neutral). There is no ground wire. My control box already has a few working 120V outlet connections that have ground, completley...

    Will Backsweetening Oxidize Cider ?

I'm very new to cider and am looking to backsweeten my first batch that just finished fermenting. I'm planning on adding fresh apple juice, not concentrate, to my cold kegged hard cider. Coming from a beer background where I tend to obsess about oxygen, so I am slightly concerned about...

    Glass and Bar Keepers Friend

Is there any reason not to use bar keepers friend to clean glass? I've been using it with a bottle brush and drill on bottles, and it works phenomenally. Just wondering BKF isn't usually recommended on this site for glass.

Why do breweries partially bottle condition?

From what I've gathered, a lot of pro breweries use a partial bottle conditioning technique. First, they force carbonate the beer to around 1.5 - 2 vol CO2. At some point in the process the beer is filtered and yeast removed. Then at bottling time yeast and sugar are added back in so that the...

Where did my hop aroma go?

Made a batch of the famous 'Cream of 3 Crops' recipe 10 days ago. Instead of the standard hop schedule, I only added 4.5oz of amarillo pellets and whirlpooled at 180F for 30 minutes before cooling. Pitched Nottingham. 3 days into fermentation I take a sample, and it smells fantastic...

At what watt density do grains scorch?

Short Version: How many watts per square inch does it take to scorch grains? Long Version: I currently have 4 small heating elements in my boil kettle that are about 800W @ 120V. I'm considering boil in a bag now, so my boil kettle would become my mash tun as well, and I want to use those...

Ball valves suck, trying out 1/2" threaded butterfly valves

I came to the conclusion a month back that ball valves just suck. Unless you completely disassemble them you just don't know if they are clean, and there was at least once where mine were not. Brulosophy had an interesting post recently on them as well. I've been looking all over for...

Do pellet hops have longer shelf life?

Do pellet hops have a longer shelf life than leaf hops when properly nitrogen purged and vacuum sealed? I get that if the hops are not nitrogen purged then pellet hops will have less surface area to oxygenate. But if the oxygen is removed, wouldn't both be equally fresh after a year of storage?

Help me invent a rotating dry hopper

Ok so this is pretty weird =] I want to build a rotating dry hopper. Lets say I have beer in a corny keg. I want to stick some hops in a small container and put that container in the keg. I want to attach the container to the lid of the corny keg, which will then be attached to a motor...

Adding more yeast after 12 hours of fermentation?

Made a batch of IPA yesterday, ended up at about 6 gallons of 1.062 wort. I put a lot of effort to make sure I did everything exactly right, but of course I messed up and forgot a starter. I pitched a two month old bag of Wyeast in the fermentor and aerated well with pure oxygen. My...

    Supercharge PBW by adding Lye?

Ok time for yet another crazy question from yours truly =) PBW is good, but not as great in hard water. I was looking at alternatives and found Brew Meisters Alkaline Brewers Wash. What interested me about it is it uses Lye (aka caustic/sodium hydroxide) making it usable in hard water, yet...

Why is my pump losing prime?

As you can see in the pictures below, I have a Chugger pump that is used to recirculate and whirlpool my boiled wort. The last few times I've used it at the end of the boil, it starts cavitating immediately. I will then turn off the pump, throttle back the flow and the pump starts to work. As...

    Gelatin vs Isinglass Experiment

Made a cloudy pale ale a few weeks ago so I thought I'd use it to experiment with finings. I tried 2 different types of gelatin, the first one is the standard unflavored knox knockoff (kroger). This stuff smells like crap, so I got some 100% bovine gelatin off amazon which smells much...
