    2016 Hop Growing Thread

IME excessive nitrates and watering anytime after mid summer will give you a lighter crop and the cones will have less smell and flavor. My first few years I babied the hops, then after they were well established I just give them a little ammonium nitrate (for an early kick) and urea (available...

    2016 Hop Growing Thread

Haven't been around for a few years. Just wanted to share a pic of the hops I planted at my folks farm in 2006. This pic was taken in 2014. Willamette in the back and on the left (shade side), Cascade, and then Columbus on the other side.

    Does Homebrewing lead to cancer?

This is not a study. This is an article written based on "referenced" studies that as of yet, has zero citations from medical professionals. It appears the guy read studies of his own choosing and drew his own conclusions! The article is new, so may be deleted or may be cited when it is...

    Favorite Commercial Brews?

With two kids in college I refrain from buying 3.00 a bottle beer (tis why I homebrew), and Miller works fine, and sometimes Mickeys are great, but mostly I try not to run outta homebrew ;)

    Lack of Yeast--Undercarbonation?

Maybe I have been waiting longer than necesary, it seems like it always takes me atleast three weeks from brew day to bottling day. I see the little globs of yeasties popping up to the top and releasing c02 and I figure its not ready, am I wrong? Just bought 12 cornies and plan to start...

    Bottling tip

I set the caps on each brew as I go then crimp in the same order they were filled, that way particles can't fall in while your bottling the rest (Im sure Im wrong about this as well)

    Bottling tip

Actually I have read several times in forums where home brewers had problems with un-even bottle carbonation, and one of the guys even pondered the thought that perhaps it had to do with the sanitizing solution left in the bottles. Personally I have only had flat beers once, and finally after...

    Bottling tip

I use the oven and bake my bottles at 350f for an hr or till I remember to shut it off. Started out rinsing them with iodophor then using the dry cycle in the dishwasher, but had carbonation problems a couple times and heard about baking the bottles from another Hb, so now when the (dry)...

    Making Cider

I have been reading up on cider also, and strted a gallon test batch yesterday with some wlp004 irish ale yeast I had sitting in the fridge. Picked up some cider at the store (no preservatives), the og was 1.050 so Im guessing I will end up with an abv around 5.5% which Im hoping will be half...
