How many gallons of EdWort's Apfelwein have been made?

Bottled my first 5 gallon batch last night. Still green, but very very drinkable. Put 1.5 liters into my seltzer bottle for poor-man's force carb. We'll see how that goes later this evening. And oh my gawd, EdWort is a M'F**kR !!!! :drunk: My head hurts so bad.. and it's the next day...

Cold crashing and bottle carbing.. bad idea?

Excellent! Just the assurance I was looking for. My garage ranges from 30-45 these days, and a water bath in the big cooler should keep things right around 36. I'll keep it in there for 72 hours or so. Thanks! -Chris

Cold crashing and bottle carbing.. bad idea?

Heya, I was thinking about attempting a cold crash for my recent Abbey to help with clearing, but I'm not yet a kegger. Will a few days at 36F ruin any chances of decent carbonation when I bottle? Thanks, - Chris

    Man, I love Apfelwein

Well, I got a 6 gal better bottle, dextrose, Montrachet yeast, and 5 gals of organic Tree Top this afternoon. Just mixed up a batch as per the original recipe waaaaaaaaaaay back on page 1. My basement has been rather too cold lately (down to 60F at night) so I'm leaving it in the kitchen for...

Recipe Review Request: "Ole Hopscotch Amber"

Howdy folks, Happy New Year! I'm considering my first brew of '08, and I'm shooting for a strong amber with distinct hoppiness... Any suggestions or feedback would be greatly appreciated! Thanks! - Chris ----------------------------------------------------------------- Type: Extract plus...

Amber Ale Recipe Review - *Newbie warning*

So the brew is dark, somewhere in the brown ale area, and smoooth. I had a taste yesterday, and it's got a wonderful mellow flavor, but with a good kick. The molasses is still noticeable, but it's nice. Bottling in a couple days, then 3 weeks to bottle condition and carbonate. Very happy...

    The hop shortage

After talking to the guys at the LHBS, it appeared to me and my buddy that while there will be hops available, some varieties will be hard to come by, and the price will most likely go up, possibly dubbeling or tripppeling. (Currently $2.25/oz at the LHBS) So we took the plunge, and went in on...

    Turkey baster too short?

Perfect! I'll grab a wine thief when I'm up at the LHBS this Friday. I picked up an auto-siphon last time I was there, and I'll be using it this weekend to rack my firstbrew to the bottling bucket and my secondbrew to secondary. Cheers! :mug: - Chris

    Turkey baster too short?

I got myself a dedicated, sanitized, turkey baster for taking hydrometer samples from my 6.5 gal primary. Unfortunately, I found that the thing is too short to reach the top of the liquid. My batch is 5 gallons, not 5.5, but I'm wondering if anyone else has run across this problem? I had to...

Amber Ale Recipe Review - *Newbie warning*

Thanks, I'm certainly planing on going in with a buddy to get 4 lbs of whole leaf hops (2 lb for bittering, 2 for aroma) and vacuum/freezing them. I made some game time decisions on the brew, and added 1/4 cup of molasses, and moved up the hops schedule for the first Hood addition to 30 minutes...

Amber Ale Recipe Review - *Newbie warning*

Hey guys, Thanks for all the feedback. I just got back from the LHBS and I did as many of you suggested and moved down the chocolate and special malt to 2oz, as well as dropping the Munich in favor of biscuit. Here's the updated (and final) recipe: [extract] 6.0 lbs muntons plain light LME...

Short brew, is secondary worth it?

Alright! Seems to be a consensus here to do a 2-2 for this first batch. I'm just gonna have to pick me up another primary at the LHBS today :-D I'm too impatient to wait until this first one is done to analyze, then start a second batch (this first was extract only, so there's not much to...

Amber Ale Recipe Review - *Newbie warning*

Hey there, I'm a complete newb, but I wanted to throw this extract+grains recipe out there and see if you guys think it's sane or not. It's a variant on one of the popular Fat Tire Clone recipes, based on the ingredients carried by my LHBS. I'm heading out there with a friend tomorrow so he...

    I'm such a geek

:D Man, it sounds like we started on the same day. (5 days in primary). I'm thinking bout getting on the "Brew Saturday" plan as well. My wife it tolerant right now, but I think I'll have to move to the 'every other weekend' plan soon.. :cross:

Short brew, is secondary worth it?

Drunkensatyr, Funkenjaeger, Thanks for the advice! Sounds like 2 weeks in primary, then 2 weeks in bottles would be the way to go for this first simple extract brew. I'm resolved to not rush this first one, but GOOD GOD it's hard :-D I guess the only legitimate reason to move it to the...

Short brew, is secondary worth it?

Heya folks, my equipment kit came with a very simple amber starter (1 can Coopers hopped LME, 2 lbs DME), and it *claims* to be ready (though probably not best) in 3 weeks. I have my doubts, but it would be nice to bust open some bottles on New Years Eve (brewed on 12/1). If I'm going to...
