    Sanibrew in airlock?

It's the pink powdery stuff. I think it's chlorine based, so my guess is that it's not a good idea to use it in an airlock. I assume it'll ruin the beer if it gets inside?

    Sanibrew in airlock?

Hi! I've read about people using sanitizer in their airlock instead of water. Is this safe to do with a Sani-brew solution? Thanks!

    Normal or Infected?

    Thanks!

    Normal or Infected?

Thanks guys! How do I know when it's dropped? will all of the Krausen have fallen back into the wort? or all of the foam floating on the surface will be gone? I still think it's too early to rack to secondary, but I'm trying to figure out what signs I should be looking out for. Actually, I...

    Normal or Infected?

That's quite a relief to hear. For some reason I had it in my mind that the white spots were an infection as they looked a little different to what I've seen before, and they look a little shiny / greasy. I'm totally cool with it not being an infection though :p

    Normal or Infected?

Hi guys, Just looked in my fermenter after 5 days - the foam prevented me from seeing what was actually going on and I saw some white spots on top. They kinda look like thick bits of foam but it was really hard to tell without poking them, which I did not actually do. Does this look normal...

    Tasting and taking gravity readings

Ok, that helps alot. Thanks for the clarification :) I'm in no rush, was just unsure when the appropriate times are to do the appropriate things.

    Tasting and taking gravity readings

Thanks for the useful tips guys but I don't think anyone actually answered my questions, we got sidetracked onto primary vs. secondary. Here they are again: - How often should I take gravity readings? and when should I start? I week, 2 weeks, 3 weeks etc. - What do I do with the foam on the top...

    Tasting and taking gravity readings

Ok, sounds like a good plan. What shall I do with the dextrose they gave me? Put a tsp in each bottle when I'm bottling from primary?

    Tasting and taking gravity readings

So, instead of 5 days in primary and then 14 in secondary and another 14 bottled, you'd advise 18 days in primary and then how long in secondary? I've read that secondary isn't necessary, but I'm confused since the instructions in the kit mention secondary.

    Tasting and taking gravity readings

How often should I take gravity readings? I'm using a Pilsner kit which recommends a primary fermentation of 3-5 days. Should I start taking readings around the 3-5 days or should I start sooner? What do I do with the foam on the top when I'm taking a sample? should I just stick the thief in...

What is the stuff forming at the bottom of the primary fermentor?

Looks like I've got a krausen ring, so definite signs of fermentation. Yay!

What is the stuff forming at the bottom of the primary fermentor?

I've seen lots of pictures of the fermentation process and none of them seemed to show such a large amount of trub so early on, I think that's why I was a little concerned. Thanks for all of the reassuring responses!

What is the stuff forming at the bottom of the primary fermentor?

Wow, thanks for the quick response. Glad to hear that it's perfectly normal. Looking forward to seeing how my first batch turns out.

What is the stuff forming at the bottom of the primary fermentor?

Hi, First post here and first attempt at making beer from a kit! So, I pitched the Wort last night and after a couple of hours I noticed a couple of inches of a sandy coloured substance settling on the bottom. I woke up this morning, and there is slightly less of it there. I'm brewing a...
