    Hazy Helles

I'm just wondering if anyone would know the answer to this. I brewed a (mock) Helles with WLP029 and it has a haze that just wont go away despite time, temp, and gelatin. I have two theories: 1- I was using some 2 or three month old yeast from an overbuilt starter. I've heard that the first...

    Partially frozen slurry

So I pulled a jar of yeast (Wyeast 1469) out of the back of the fridge to discover that it was partially frozen. We recent moved and I didn't realize the new refrigerator would get that cold in the back. I was planning to use this to make a starter later today. Any thoughts? It looks like the...

    Calculating slurry

Will I need a new electrode

I got a Milwaukee PH56 from a friend that had it for over a year and never took it out of the box. Will it need a new electrode to function?

Maybe don't leave silicone in a bucket of starsan for 2 weeks.

Found this in the bottom of a bucket of starsan. Was one of those clear silicone TC gaskets from the 7gal Chronical. I must have not noticed it and then left it in there for about 2 weeks. Now it's is totally opaque white and powdery. Did make me laugh though.

    Hop utilization at knockout

I recently incorporated a pump for whirlpool chilling into my system. I was wondering about knockout hop utilization if the pump is running. Does circulating the 210 - 200F wort through the pump create more bitterness than if it was just sitting static? I didn't know if part of hop...

    Would this pump setup work

I'm new to using pumps but I wanted to get your opinions on if this would work. Basically I'd like to be able to use the pump to whirlpool and then run to my fermentor without changing hoses. Attached is the diagram of what I'm thinking. Thoughts? Would this work?

    Lager reassurance

I've got a schwarzbier in the fermentor. It's been there about 9 days now and I'm just checking for some reassurance. I'm rather inexperienced with lager beers but the ferment seemed to be going well for about a week of solid bubbling but now had stopped and its at 1.020. This is an all grain...

Trying to figure out secondary regulator

So I added a secondary regulator to my 3 keg keezer. I wanted to have a Belgian beer set higher than my other American ales. I got a taprite in line secondary but I'm having issues adjusting it. It seems to want to creep up to 15psi no matter what I set it at. I have no idea why this is...

    Was this really stupid...

So I was brewing a Scottish 60 Schilling and per Jamil declined to use a full starter since my year was decently fresh and the OG was 1.034. After I collected my runnings a pulled out 600ml of wort to wake the yeast up (boiled this of course). When I when to dump the vial of WLP 001 I couldnt...

    Sanitary filter with better bottle

So I'm preparing to brew my first lager. I want to go from the kettle into a better bottle that I will use as settling tank to chill the work don't from 70 to 45 where I will rack into my speidel tank fermenter. I know this will put pressure on the better bottle as the temp changes so I was...

    Williams Brewing Controller III

Has anyone used one of the Williams Brewing Controller III for fermentation temp control? I currently use a Johnson A419 with a chest freezer but find that it over shoots temp pretty drastically at times and was wondering if the 50% duty cycle on this unit could help with that. It doesn't have...

    Fermenting WLP002 at 60F

I started brewing the Can You Brew It: Brown Shugga recipe this weekend. I intended to conduct the first 1/3 of fermentation at 64F and then slowly raise the temp as Tasty said, however due to a kitchen issue that left me apartment rather smokey my fermentation freezer was left for the night...
