Spice, Herb, or Vegetable Beer Coconut Porter 1st Place in 2nd Round 2011 HBT Comp

I bought some coconut water... I opened it and it smells like piss. Not putting that crap in my beer. I stuck with toasted flakes in nylon bags and made my own extract with vodka. In secondary now.

Spice, Herb, or Vegetable Beer Coconut Porter 1st Place in 2nd Round 2011 HBT Comp

...but either way it was boiled. Wondering if a late addition of coconut water would work too in secondary.

    The thermostat

I didn't think of this before but I have a setback thermostat in the house. It is set to 68 when we are home, but sets back to 65 overnight and 60 while we are at work... Is that temperature swing enough to affect the yeast in my fermenter? Should I ditch the setback while brewing? A few...

    What's your beer "worth"?

As I stated before, I did this just to think of a "theoretical" cost... Not because I think of this as "work" or anything other than a hobby... If someone asked me "what would your beer cost if I bought it at a store?"... This is what i would tell them.... Of course my calculation methods are...

    What's your beer "worth"?

But the satisfaction of "doing things my way" is worth the price... Hey... for a 5 gallon batch, $240 is only $5 a bottle... I've paid over $10 for a single bottle of Rochefort 10. If your beer is good, it's worth it. (at least to me it is...)

    What's your beer "worth"?

I use 10% of equipment as that is the industry standard that we use for equipment loss in the pro audio equipment rental business. You're right though... Pots and buckets last longer than DJ speakers. That said I can knock a few pennies off. My time is worth at least $30/hour. Let's just...

    What's your beer "worth"?

Just for fun I applied the model I use for my business to a bottle of my brew... Cost of ingredients + Cost of bottles/caps + 5% (EDITED) of the cost of equipment used to make the batch + My average labor wage over the total time invested + The cost of gas/mileage if I used the LHBS Then...

    5 Expensive Hobbies article

My other hobbies are pretty expensive... --DJing - Over $35,000 worth of equipment --Skiing - A single day lift ticket is running almost $100/day now in VT. Not to mention the cost of equipment! Sure as hell more expensive than BALLROOM DANCING!!!! WTF?

    Steeping Bag ?

Bump... I washed my nylon bags in the washing machine (with dishwasher detergent... my wife uses clothes detergent with febreeze in it! Yuck) They still are discolored green from the hops... Any concern about soaps/detergents destroying head retention if I use them again?

Spice, Herb, or Vegetable Beer Coconut Porter 1st Place in 2nd Round 2011 HBT Comp

Just a note on this... I am second guessing my decision to add coconut to the boil for fears that the oils will destroy head retention. That said, I toasted 12 oz of coconut and added it to a bottle and filled it with vodka. (I'm up to almost an entire bottle of vodka to cover it as the...

Spice, Herb, or Vegetable Beer Coconut Porter 1st Place in 2nd Round 2011 HBT Comp

Just pitched.... Added some toasted coconut to the boil and also gave it a little extra lme kick... Sg was 1.068! Wyeast 1056 American ale. Also dumped the rest of my toasted coconut into some vodka to make an extract. Had to make it my own!

Pulling bottles from your neighbor's recycle bin - thrifty or across the line?

If I saw someone rooting through my trash I would think they're a total weirdo.... Just tell him WHY you want his bottles and I'm sure they will stop forming crazy opinions about you...

Always great when you find the bottle full of cigarette butts!

Country music's fixation on ICE COLD BEER

At least they like beer (if you can call it that)... So we have something in common.

    Condensation = Angry Wife

Insulate any surface which is collecting condensation... Exposed metal surfaces or even thin plastic ones will allow the surface to hit dewpoint in a moist environment. An insulated surface will be closer to ambient temperature (above dewpoint).

    Changing temperature half-way through?

I sometimes end up second guessing myself... going from about 70 down to 60 or even 65. I move my carboys and buckets around the house depending on how and when they're fermenting. But yeah, 82 sounds really high unless you're dealing with a belgian strong and want all those fruity flavors...

    Fermentation in smoking garage

The smoke would have to go backwards thru the airlock. Not possible unless it is open or not sealed. If the airlock is bubbling out, you can be sure smoke isn't going in.
