A few issues today, looking for any feedback to see if I should worry.

OK, so first brew session in a while. I have little kids so I don't get the chance to do it as often. Today I did a simple pale ale 5gal batch. My copper immersion chiller sprung several leaks but I didn't realize this until I was cooling. I'm guessing 1/2 to 1 gal got in there. My chiller...

American Pale Ale Manwell's Pale (Mosaic SMaSH)

Just kegged basically the same thing 8 days ago, already sneaking tastes from the keg. I yielded 20gal and had pretty much the same recipe. Mash at 152 43# of 2 row(I love MO but I cheaped out) 3oz at 60 3oz at 20 3oz at 5 3oz at 0 1 US-05 per fermenter rehydrated Hop Tea into the keg when...

    Is 75% efficiency the norm?

I am impressed with the efficiency of BIAB. I have been a typical AGB, and with a new baby, looking to simplify my brew day routine. My first attempt at BIAB I got a lot higher efficiency. I have always been consistently around 65% with a simple mash out in the cooler(no sparge). I got 73%...

Clog in dip tube or liquid tubing

That is what I'm thinking but would need to have a good seal or beer would spill... Oh, I could use my portable CO2 cartridge thingy. You know, the kind that looks like a bike tire inflator. That with a growler tube might do the trick!

Clog in dip tube or liquid tubing

Hi All, My yeast was very flocculant(sounds funny)! Anyway, my newly kegged beer is very slow to poor and kind of chugs along in spurts. I believe I have a yeast or protein blob stuck in the plumbing. Does anyone have a quick tip on how to backflush and possible get the goobers out of...

Oxiclean on Stainless I DARE you to prove me wrong

Love oxy. I fill to the top(and press poppet valve to get it in the diptube. Then flush, rinse with water and flush, then starsan shake and flush. I have a keg that has been filled with Oxy for over a month. I'll keg this weekend and update if I have any issues. I don't think it will be a...

    Fermenting with Fruit Question

Hi All, I'm making a variation of Ed Worts Apfelwein. 2.5 gal apple juice 1 15oz can of Oregon blackberries Montrachet yeast I have never used fruit in the fermenter and I'm not sure what the best practices are. I'm about 2 weeks in, fermentation is slowing down. I'm not sure if I...

    Man, I love Apfelwein

Hello all, I've made this many times but I have never used fruit until recently. I simply went with 2.5gal apple juice with 1 can of Oregon Fruit blackberries. Montrachet OG - 1046 My Question: Can I leave the fruit in until bottling or should I remove the fruit once the fermentation...

Freezing CO2 tanks prior to filling.

My welding supply store weighs my empty tank, then weighs the filled tank. if the difference is greater than 5lbs they open the valve until it loses weight. In that situation, cold or warm, 5lbs is 5lbs.

    Regulator acting wacky

Hi All, I have an issue that I'm hoping someone is familiar with. I have a dual regulator setup that simply outputs to the typical picnic taps. It has been working fine for years. All of a sudden, one regulator(the one closest to the tank), is always over pressure. So, if I back the...

    Midwest Supplies

I feel your pain. I have called Midwest on these situations in the past. They have offered to send my order express since they didn't ship in a reasonable time-frame. Give that a shot. Then order from Northern Brewer the next time you are in a time crunch. They package and ship very...

    Midwest Supplies

I have a preference for Midwest because I have had great experience with their support. Also their prices always seem the be lower than Northern Brewer. However...... If I need something to arrive in less than 1 week I always pay more and go with Northern Brewer. Midwest can't seem to...

    Windguard for SQ14

Great idea. thanks for the pics and description. It was very easy to do on my sq14. I didn't measure the times but I think that it really made it more efficient. My flame stayed blue and there was no soot residue so I don't think it affected the air fuel mixture. Well done!

First partial/mini mash and no gas :(

Yeah, as long as you added sugar to prime the beer for bottling it will certainly develop co2. Try moving the bottles somewhere between 60-70degrees F if it isn't already there. Give it some more time.

    Fermentation question...

Yes, you are in business. Since it is still bubbling there has been a co2 layer protecting the beer. Looks perfectly normal.

What dip tube / ball valve combo for a keggle with IC??

Orfy, I like the simplicity of your setup. Do you use this regularly? Does it ever get gunked up? How do you attach the scrubby? Do you secure it or not? I just got a Shirron plate for Christmas. I put in a weldless bulkhead and I'm playing around with diptubes. Thanks

off flavor - medicinal/band-aid - i know chlorine BUT help me solve the puzzle

Just a recap on the medicinal causes: Chlorine or Chloramine in the water Poor yeast health High fermentation temps Water from a bad garden hose Any others you guys can think of? I don't believe infection causes the medicinal taste. Correct me on that if I am wrong. The pitching temp is...

Medicine, Band Aid Off Flavor - Solved

Yeah, that is my next concern. I am debating just dealing with the off flavor and toughing it out. I am wondering if it is a bad idea from a health standpoint.

Medicine, Band Aid Off Flavor - Solved

Yes, good advice. A potable hose would do the trick. I learned the hard way. I didn't drink from the hose before brewing. If I had it would have been very obvious that there was a problem.

Medicine, Band Aid Off Flavor - Solved

Yeah, I usually don't use garden hose water, but I don't filter my home water and the hose water is the same as the water from the sink. The difference of course in this case was the hose. Never had a problem with my water so I will continue to use the tap water(but not from the hose). I will...
