    Alien Plastic in the Fermenter!

Hi Guys. This batch is a simple Coopers IPA can with some LME and a hint of dextrose. I just opened my fermenter to bottle after a month. I got a nasty shock when I saw the plastic lid from the LME floating on the top of the wort! Will this have damaged the beer? I saw no sign of...

How old were you when you began this journey?

36 I emigrated to Canada 5 years ago from the UK/NI and disliked the mainstream beers here and they were far too expensive. I missed Fursty Ferret, Smithwicks, Guinness and others so I thought I'd try my own. I actually liked Saranac Lake IPA/PA so I thought I'd try - et voila! Even extract...

    Burst Grain Bag

Thanks guys. Temperature control during a mash is something I'm gonna have to get a tighter grip on. Its bubbling away in the fermenter so hopefully yeast and time work wonders! Sent from my GT-P3113 using Home Brew mobile app

    Christianity and home brewing

Having grown up in a fairly strict church, I was interested to note that the bible placed the negative on the one overindulging and not the wine. Id made my mind up on the matter when sitting in a Chemistry lecture at uni I heard the professor talk about an enzyme that the liver produces...

    Burst Grain Bag

I had researched the use of oats in a stout and realised I needed to mash with some grain to extract the goodness. It was my first time using a grain bag and it all seemed to be going well. There were a couple of little boil over scares but nothing major. When I tried to lift the grain bag...

Yeast dead - too long in primary?

Hey folks So I had a batch of Coopers IPA with a some light DME and some dextrose in primary in May. Soccer season took over then work got busy so I only got round to bottling it last night - 6 months in primary! It smelled and tasted ok and the FG was about 1.005 so 6.9% or so...

Most inexpensive vendor for Canadians? also need simple recipe.

Hi Jeremy. I'm an hour SE of you in Cornwall. I got a beginners kit from a LHBS. You can get this for about $80 or so. Then add the pieces you need. For ingredients I travel to Ottawa to DeFalco's and other times Toronto Brewing Company - they are real helpful. Zack is very helpful -...

    Pitching onto used yeast?

Good idea Jim! That sounds like a good plan! Cheers. :mug:

    Pitching onto used yeast?

I can't believe how fast my first batch went! I'm about to bottle my second batch tomorrow and was thinking about pitching another 5G directly onto the yeast cake in the fermenter. A few things got me thinking. 1 - I used Cooper's IPA yeast. Is this stuff ok for a second cycle? 2 -...

    Fursty Ferret Brew 2!

This may be a little :off: but I'm also a little buzzed after watching Ireland beat the Welsh in the rugby earlier - I was putting my shoulder into every Irish tackle!

    Fursty Ferret Brew 2!

Sooo! A week after carbonation due to scientific concerns (and budget limitations) I am feeling the buzz from the first 4 500ml of my first brew. :mug: I hear the amens from the HBT community! 3 weeks after starting my first brew I decided to get the ball rolling on my second. I did...

    First taste!

Thanks Unionrdr. I noticed the fruity aroma during fermentation and assumed I'd fermented at a temperature that was a little high. I guess it could be just the yeast. Any recommendations for an effective less fruity IPA yeast at 60 degrees or so? :mug:

    First taste!

Thanks guys. It's exciting to think I've 35 X 500ml bottles to to and it's only going to get better. I think next time I'll use Chinook instead of Cascade to try the pine effect!
