    Large batches of extract

Has anybody any experience of large batches of extract brewing? I'm thinking about brewing 25 gallons with mostly LME and some DME. Has anybody moved from large batches of extract to large batches of all grain? Any recommendations of equipment that will work well for the big batches of...

20 gal plastic drums - airlock & valve config?

I just got 2 of these 20 gallon plastic drums from ebay. They have these clamp on lids Smelled to all hell like olives when I got them, but a 3hr soak in hotwater & oxy took care of that. I'm trying to determine how to rig an airlock or blowoff and whether or not I want to...

    U.S. Hops Rhizome Sources

Guide to buying hops online I've been shopping a lot for rhizomes and figured I'd lay it out for all that are on the same path. Thyme Garden: $3 flat rate shipping - $5.35-$7.50/rhizome Freshops: Higher shipping - $4.50-$10 Good selection American Brewmaster: Avg-S&H $3.95 - $5.05...

    1st apfelwein - lightstruck?

My 1st try at AW has an off flavor, at least I think. I've done about 10 batches of wine in my life, all grape. Maybe I just need to get used to it, but it has a bit of a, umm, kind of rubbery, sourness flavor / odor. It doesn't taste like fusels. I fermented at 72' for 6 weeks and bottled...

    Most Durable Grain Mill

I've read though many of the grain mill threads on the forum. I am comparing (as most do) the Schmidling P, the Crankandstein CGM-2D, and the BC 15lb. I will be running many a hundreds of lbs through this and would like the one that will hold up the best. Even though the Barley Crusher looks...

    Rope color?

Given a choice, would there be any benefits or consequences to any particular color of rope? I'd think black would be bad as it would get hot. Is there any colors that may help repel insects, particularly aphids?

    Importing Hops

I've recently been told by a canadian hops dealer that they have had problems shipping hops over to the US. Something about the FDA and a $75 fee they charge for 'certification'. Has anybody ever shipped hops over the border? My other thought is that I take a trip up there and bring them back...

    Dacron rope?

It seems if one is looking for a high quality outdoor rope, Dacron seems to be the most revered for durability. My question, anybody know if this is suitable for use with plants like hops?

    Nylon rope?

Is nylon rope suitable for hops growing? It seems to me it should last longer than any sort of natural rope and would be reusable year after year. Is there a better alternative?

Autolysis - Does anybody really know?

I can't seem to find any good information about this. Or I should say I've found a lot of conflicting information. On a homebrewing scale, is autolysis a concern for beer left in the primary fermenter? If so, how long, and how do variables like gravity, yeast strain, and temperature...

Do you want to pee standing up?

How about a device that allows a woman to stand up and piss? Why, Why? Really WTF!?!?! That's it, I'm buying one for SWMBO...:cross: >Penis Envy

High Gravity Secondary? at 70' or 50'?

I've brewed a high gravity ale w/ WLP099 (super high gravity wyeast). I fermented it upstairs at 72', but I think I may let it clear in a secondary for a while. I'm wondering, should I bother? At what point do you say, yes this beer should age for a while before bottling? At what point do you...

Raising kettle above flame to improve efficiency

My brew pot is very wide - 24". My Banjo burner is pretty wide too - 10". My problem is that as I crank up the BTUs to get 20+ gallons on boil, the flames lick up the sides of the pot. Without knowing the science behind it, it just seems to me that if the pot were lifted above the flame, so...

    O2 test kits

I've recently added o2 to my set up. I'm wondering, how much o2 is enough, and how much is too much? I was thinking about picking up one of these tetratest kits They use a color scale to indicate ppm from 2-14. Anybody have any information on the proper o2 ppm for optimum yeast growth?

    Pre-Pump CFC Integrated O2 Injection

Haven't had a chance to try it. The idea is the pump will draw the wort through the CFC. Right before the pump, the O2 is added through the clear tube connected to a MAPP/O2 torch with only the O2 on. The pump agitates the gas and liquid and outputs (through valve and tube not yet installed)...

    Should have known...

Well, since I never did this the first time, and actually pissed a bunch of people off, and now that I feel like a part of the community that owes all of you for what I know now, I'm Nick, I've been brewing for a while, since 1999. I've always brewed extract, usually kits. I've adapted to...

The best experiments w/ split batches

If any of you remember, I came in here(to HBT) real cocky, talking about doing 25 gallon batches in a HDPE water tank... Well anyway, I've learned a bunch(including maybe a little humility) and have decided that at very least, a big batch deserves to be split, experimented with and observed...

Biggest batch with a BANJO Burner?

I'm really considering the Banjo burner, especially after a great link in this thread. It's rated up to 210k btu's (I have a high pressure regulator). Hypothetically, this should easily boil a large batch, but has anybody used it for 20+ gallon boils? My brewpot is 24" around. The...

    Tasting Vs. Drinking?

Yeah, we all taste the fermented wort (uncarbonated beer) when racking and bottling, but at what point do you step back and accept the fact that you just *DRANK* a fairly large amount of green, unprimed beer complete with floating trub/sediment. I guess for me it was when I filled my empty...

    Giant Brewpot Drain Position

I've just received my 160 qt aluminum brewpot. I'm going to be installing a drain, but I am wondering how high to position it. The kettle is about 24" x 24", the drain is 3/4" fpt. I am planning for 25 gallon batches. Is there a rule of thumb for percentage of trub? Or another method to go by?
