question on whirlpool rest and techniques

Hello, I moved to an upgraded single tier system and my boil kettle has the ability of whirlpooling. I thought I understood the process from an article I read, but now I can't find that article any longer and all methods I'm reading are different. Everything says to whirlpool for 20 min...

    small barrel question

Hello everyone, What is everyone's opinion on aging beer in smaller barrels? Unwaxed, fully waxed, partially waxed? I'm under the impression that a reg 56 gal barrel has a perfect 02 exchange, but smaller barrels have too much based on surface area. Is it best to leave a 10 gal...

high OG staggered yeast and sugar additions

Hello, I brewed a beer with a OG of 1.160. This beer is essentially a modified The Bruery Black Tuesday clone. I pitched an initial 2.5 liter starter with 490 billion cells. It will be about 14% as of now if it ferments properly. It is going to town now. I want it to get around 18%. I have a...

I need some reassurance on infection risk of starters. help!!!

Hello all, I have been brewing for quite some time, but have never done a starter yet. I am about to do one and I am paranoid about infection. When we direct pitch yeast into a beer, we immidiatly put on the airlock to keep out oxygen and foreign material. With a starter, we keep a...

    weird question about grain sanitation

Hello, This may sound like a weird question, but does the boil really sanitize everything that may have been on your grain? For example, I dropped about a pound of uncrushed grain on the dirty floor of my brew shop, swept it up, and put it back with the other grain to be crushed thinking...

    no sparge brewing question

Hello all, A recipe I want to brew is calling for no sparge, but it doesn't give water volumes or instructions. It is all grain. I have several all grain batches down and am comfortable with conventional sparging. Have never heard of no sparge. Do I just combine volumes of strike and sparge...

to train or not to train side shoots?

Hello, I know this subject is brushed on in other threads, but all are somewhat indirect answers and speak to general situations. Im wondering what I should do in my case. I have three 2nd year hop plants. (First year i have them). They are about 13 feet tall and are developing a ton of...

brewers edge controller 11 and space heater question

I am using a controller 11 and space heater to heat the freezer side of a side by side fridge in order to make a fermentation chamber. I live where it gets pretty cold at night. So far, with adding additional insulation, the set up can only get to 63 F. I want 69 F. Could I add a second space...

got an old CO2 tank that is full. still ok?

I recently aquired a 15lb tank that is full, good condition on the outside, a sticker that says co2, and a hydrotest stamp of 2001. Is this still ok to use? Im worried about it changing somehow or a possibility of it not actually being co2 in there?? Anyway to tell or am I just being paranoid?

how to keep the inside of a fridge warmer in cold weather???

hello all, I have a beer fridge/keggerator in my unheated garage. the ambient air temp in the garage is about 32 and in the fridge is about 29. I would like the temp inside the fridge to be somewhere around 38 or maybe a little higher. I have considered a reptile heat rock or heat lamp, but a...

how to connect a commercial sanke regulator to a corney regulator? ?????

Hello, I ordered all my parts for a sanke draft system and a corney system. I want to connect the two regulators so I can run it off of one tank at different pressures with each regulator. My plan was to use a coupler between the two, but when the parts arrived, the sanke is left hand thread...

What is the proper way to handle reaching the pre-boil wort volume before your mash t

hello everyone, I have brewed four batches of all grain so far and they have all turned out pretty decent. I am still getting all the nuisances and system specific issues down now. The only thing I have had trouble finding information on is boil volume issues. What is the proper way...

additions and priming sugar to bottling bucket??

I am bottling a stout soon. I plan to make a coffee and bourbon addition to the bottling bucket. Is there anything I have to do differently when adding priming sugar to this? I planned on adding priming sugar, bourbon, and coffee, then racking the beer on top of it. Sound good? Does this affect...

    Sanitizing coffee??

I know this topic has been discussed already, but I never read anything that suggested this method... thoughts on skipping secondary and making additions directly to primary

Hello, I know this topic is discussed in the forums already, but none of the previous ones answer my question. In standard beers, when no additions have to be made post fermentation, I always skip secondary fermentation. I am now making a vanilla java stout that calls for adding coffee and...
