Corny kegs becoming harder to find?

I was at my LHBS inquiring about kegs yesterday, and the guy told me the following: - Corny kegs are basically all used now; none have been manufactured in probably 15 years - With homebrewing becoming increasingly popular it's becoming harder to find corny kegs I thought that was...

    I've never seen this before...

This is my California Common; brewed it 8 days ago. There is weird snotty stuff floating at the top. I don't know if it's an infection or what, but I've never had this in a batch before. Maybe something to do with using lager yeast...? Any ideas? Thanks.

Primary for 4 weeks, SG is 1.000 (!) - but still bubbling in blowoff!?

I brewed a saison four Saturday's ago tomorrow, and it's been in primary (6g better bottle) since then. I was hoping to bottle tomorrow but the blowoff is still bubbling every minute or so. So this morning I took a SG reading and it's 1.000! This is using Wyeast 3711 so I heard it makes a...

Help cloning an English Mild with limited recipe info

I want to clone a beer (an english mild), but the brewery doesn't share their recipes. This is what I know about the ingredients: Hops: Galena (I'm guessing for bitterring) and Willamette (I'm guessing for aroma). Malts: they use Extra Special, and Victory. Then at least one other type, I...

Adding extract late in the boil vs hop utilization

I've read many people on these forums claim that you can (and should) add your extract late in the boil. Claimed advantages are that the resulting beer will be lighter in color and have less of that mysterious 'extract twang'. I'm reading John Palmer's How To Brew and according to the section...

Nothing for 36 hrs... finally bubbling airlock after shaking

I am making the None More Black Vanilla Stout recipe (https://www.homebrewtalk.com/f68/none-more-black-vanilla-stout-96969/) using White Labs WLP004 Irish Ale Yeast. This is my first time using White Labs yeast and I don't think I shook it hard enough. When I pitched it, some came out as a...

Ale pail smells like soap, and I'm brewing today

So my last brew was pretty active and left the inside of my primary ale pail covered in dry krausen, right up to the lid. I put a scoop of Oxi Clean Free in there and filled it with hot water, but it's been sitting like that since I bottled that brew 2 1/2 weeks ago. I'm getting ready to use...

Does my hop sack look normal?

Seems like one side is bigger than the other. Not sure where else to go for an opinion...

Smack pack timing to achieve under-pitching?

I'm brewing a weizen, and I favor the banana-flavors in weizens. I'm using Wyeast 3068. The Wyeast site says this: This yeast strain produces a beautiful and delicate balance of banana esters and clove phenolics. The balance can be manipulated towards ester production through increasing the...

Rinsed some wort into my Star San

I made a fresh batch of Star San for my brew day yesterday. I accidentally rinsed something with wort on it right over the Star San, so I got a little wort in it. Today it's not perfectly clear, it's a little green-tinged. Would you still use it on your next batch? I figure it must still have...

When is too late to take OG reading?

I just finished brewing 30 minutes ago but in a rush to run out to dinner I forgot to take an OG reading. When is too late to crack the ale pale back open and take an OG reading? (Obviously the SG will start changing soon...). Thanks.

Bought beer last week, best before date is 5 weeks from now...

I bought a 12-pack of Fat Tire at Meijer last week. I noticed the one I am drinking didn't taste quite right (although I find sometimes beers taste differently one time to another and it might just be me), so I checked out the best before date: 24FEB13. I'm surprised I bought it last week and...

Can I add top-off water after fermentation?

So I just figured out that the gallon labels on my primary fermenter pail are most likely wrong. That means my fermenting beer is about 4.2 gallons whereas I thought it was 5 gallons. I was wondering if I could add 0.8 gallons of distilled water after fermentation (right before bottling I...

Unexpected priming screwup! Sugar hardened in pail.

Today I bottled my first batch (5 gallon extract Fat Tire clone). I made a 'simple syrup' by boiling water with my dextrose priming sugar in a small saucepan. I boiled it for a while, and the sugar was obviously 100% dissolved in the water. I think the total volume was ~ 1 cup. I poured 3/4...

How much beer is in this carboy?

The image below is my first brew (Fat Tire clone). After two weeks in the primary (ale pail) I siphoned to my 5 gallon Better Bottle for a week in secondary before bottling. My concern is that the carboy doesn't look very full to me. When I topped off my wort in the ale pail on brew day I got...

Second brew, blow-off tube on airlock setup (with pics)

My second brew is a chocolate porter. Pitched the yeast (Wyeast American Ale 1056) Sunday at 7pm. The airlock was already showing a little activity an hour later. This morning at 6:45 I found the airlock full of wort, and some wort spilled on the pail lid: I cleaned the airlock and...

    New non-brewery in Detroit

Batch Brewing Co., a nano-brewery opening up in Corktown Detroit. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/11/27/batch-brewing-co-detroit-stephen-roginson-corktown_n_2197823.html Is this brewer (Stephen Roginson) a poster here on HBT? :mug:

    Trouble taking OG reading

When I did my first brew last Saturday I had trouble getting an accurate SG reading before I pitched the yeast. The surface of the wort in the fermenter was covered in bubbles... I tried to clear away the bubbles each time I dropped the hydrometer in, but each time the bubbles sort of swarmed...

Ale Pail and UV - any concern?

Should I block up a window that might let sunlight hit my ale pail primary, or are they considered opaque enough that it's not a problem?

    First brew is fermenting!

I'm happy to see this airlock activity ~13 hours after pitching the yeast yesterday. http://youtu.be/PGjioAgD4MA It's a Fat Tire clone. Yeast is Wyeast 1272 American II. Temperature on the pail is reading around 64F right now, and I expect it to be close to 68F during the day. Exciting.
