Dry hopping: pellet vs whole leaf extraction time?

I usually dry hop 5 gallons with 2 ounces of pellets for 3 days. There doesn't seem to be a whole lot to gain going any longer than that. A friend gave me 2 ounces of whole leaf to try. Is the extraction time on whole leaf the same as pellets or a bit longer?

    Question for Chicago lager brewers

Hey Chicago, I'm currently living in and have been brewing in San Francisco for the last 9 years, but want to move back to Chicago this fall. 95% of what I brew are German Pilsners, with the occasional hoppy beer sprinkled in. We have really lean water here and I can build just about any water...

    Slurry re-pitch timing

I usually harvest about 100-125 ml of lager yeast from my fermenter 2-3 days before I brew again. The yeast has been harvested, but unfortunately I can't get to my next brew day for two weeks now. Should I be concerned about the yeast health/vitality considering I've harvested and am holding...

Does all chloride and sulfate (ppm) make it to the kettle?

I've been looking for an answer to this, but the conversations I've seen always seems to be focused around calcium loss and what's levels are proper for an ale or lager. If I build my mash water to have 50 ppm chloride and 100 ppm sulfate, and run my sparge with roughly 4 gallons, will all the...

Help identifying apples from Northern Sonoma County

Someone gave me these apples from Mount Saint Helena, Northern Sonoma County. She not 100% sure, but she thinks they are Golden Delicious. As you can see, they have a decent amount of russeting on top, and have been off the tree for about a week and are starting to turn a light shade of...

    Danby DAR044ABDD kegerator build

I'm not doing anything ground breaking but wanted to share my build so far. I cut the molded shelving brackets out and covered the cuts with a couple layers of aluminum tape. I wanted to keep the C02 tank outside so it could be changed out easier and used to purge carboys and kegs. I mounted...

    1560 GPH too much for a 3/8" x 25' IC?

I'm having trouble getting down to pitch temp and am thinking of adding a submersible pump and ice bath setup to get my wort down to my desired pitch temp. I know I won't be achieving a 1560 flow rate because that's at 0 feet, but most of the posts I have seen with a pump similar to this...

Final RPM (at grinding drum) for motorized Weston apple grinder?

Decided to motorize my apple grinder for the upcoming season, but I'm not sure what to make the final RPM at the grinding drum. I was thinking about gearing it for an RPM of around 180. Anyone have any thought on whether that is too slow/fast? I haven't purchased the pulleys yet so I can go...

Anyone have experience measuring the TA of raw cider with a pH meter?

I'm planning on doing some presses of single varietal, heirloom apples this fall and would like to measure and adjust the TA where necessary. Been doing a lot of searches on TA testing and coming up with a lot of different information. Some say use anywhere from a 5-15ml sample, some say to use...
