    Greetings from Alberta!

After doing a bit of research, it is possible to buy hop vines here in Edmonton, but there will be the same problem you encountered where people probably don't know what they are. Have you gone through the process of malting barley? I'm interested in maybe attempting one day, but I'm not much...

    Greetings from Alberta!

Hello, I'm.interested about that as well, I know some brewers in the Edmonton area have no trouble growing hops -- some even have trouble getting rid of the vines in their backyard. However, I'm not sure about any local sellers. If I do find some I'll let you know as I am very interested in this...

    Greetings from Alberta!

Just go to http://www.ehg.ca/ Sign-up is $35. I'm not a member yet, but I will be joining next September for sure. I'm a student journalist, so I've already talked to a few of the bigger guys there for stories and features in the newspaper. It sounds like they have a lot to offer and they are...

    Greetings from Alberta!

Hello, i'm also from Alberta. Nice to see somebody close by. The people here are great and have a very wide range of experience and skill sets. Most of them are engineers with little tricks that can help make make your brewing that much easier. Enjoy making the beer, it is a fantastic...

WORST Home Brew Store experience ever!

I've had an experience kind of similar to this at one of my LHBS's. I screwed up my first real batch of beer (actual first was a beer in a bag) and decided to go in and ask what I did wrong and see if I could correct it while picking up supplies for my next batch. I fully realized that I made a...

    Does hibiscus inhibit krausen?

Were you going for a bold or a more subtle hibiscus flavour with the brew? Also, does the high alcohol content of vodka kill any potential bigs that might infect the brew? Sorry if I sound like a noob, this is my first attempt at additions other than hops.

    Does hibiscus inhibit krausen?

Do you wash the leaves when you put it into the secondary? Or do you make tea?

    Does hibiscus inhibit krausen?

How much Hibiscus did you add at flame out?

    Does hibiscus inhibit krausen?

A quick google search said that it contains an essential oil that is good for hair and for aroma therapy.. but would oils consist in a similar capacity in dried leaves?

    Does hibiscus inhibit krausen?

I'm brewing a hibiscus pale ale using and american northwest ale yeast by wyeast. I brewed this batch on Saturday with an og of 1.054 and there has been little to no krausen formation (albeit the gravity has fallen to 1.012).. Prior research on this ale yeast has said that it provides a thick...

How long should I set aside for my first day with a wine kit?

Yep, found that one out right after I asked. From now on, I'll keep two hydrometers at home haha.

How long should I set aside for my first day with a wine kit?

    Why the backup hydrometer?

How long should I set aside for my first day with a wine kit?

I've heard that there are some issues with using de-mineralized water, so I think that I'll save that one until I'm at least a bit more advanced. And I've got sanitization down to a science with my beer brewing, so I should be good. I have a pretty limited amount of time this week with exams and...

How long should I set aside for my first day with a wine kit?

Hello there, I will be making my first wine kit, and I'm wondering how much time I need to set aside on the first day in order to make it? The kit is a cab/sauv if that matters. I've made quite a few searches on google and found nothing of the sort... only the time it takes for the entire...

    Racking troubles

I used a liquid APA yeast.

    Racking troubles

Not bad actually. I was pretty impressed. 5% alcohol, medium body, still sour kind of like a belgian.. I think it had a bit of a souring infection because of that, but it works well with the hops I think (maybe I'm in denial? Who knows.)

    Racking troubles

The way I was originally taught (by a chemical engineer) was to leave the beer in the primary for 4-6 days, then transfer to the carboy for 2 weeks. Is leaving it in the primary for 2 weeks a better option? I know the beer tastes like La Fin Du Monde because I took a gravity reading when I...

    Racking troubles

Thanks for the advice, I'll leave it sit for a couple days more. As it stands after just an hour or so I can already see a lot of activity going on in the primary (top is pushing upwards, and foam is starting to form on top). So, leaving hops from the boil in the primary won't necessarily leave...

    Racking troubles

Last night, I transfered the beer in my primary into my carboy on the fourth day. Last night, the bung popped out of the carboy and made a mess onto the floor. I know now for sure that I racked a few days too early, my reasoning was when I did the boil, a lot of the hops got out of the hop sack...
