The cloudiness is from the hot water and prolonged PBW soaks. The plastic siphon pieces get micro fractures from hot water and extended cleaner soaks. Eventually they will form legit cracks and cause leaks. I flush mine with homemade PBW in slightly warm tap water for no longer than 30 min...

You can use them. I know people do, but I just think they are fugly (the kegs...and some of the people). However, getting a sight glass on it might be an issue if you ever want one.

Yeah, I'd imaging there's not much worse than cleaning hardened on krausen from plastic threadings.

Cleaning aside, it also allows for the addition of hop bagged items that you don't want floating free in the fermenter. It's essentially a glass bucket in that regard.
