interested in all grain... trying to do the math

Thank you all for the input. I appreciate the information. I understand the idea of spending the extra loot, up front, for the extra volume, instead of replacing everything down the road. I, personally, do not see 10 gallon batches in my future, though. I like to jump around too much to have 10...

interested in all grain... trying to do the math

I'm a BIAB brewer who is looking to move up to all grain brewing. my current "set up" is a patio/turkey fryer burner and a 10 gal NB tallboy kettle with a mesh bag and digital probe thermometer. This setup usually suits my needs for volume for the beers that I like to brew and drink, which is...

need help with my temp controller

problem seems to have righted itself. I was getting off readings when the probe was lying against the side or bottom of the freezer. after putting the carboy in and attaching the probe to it, instead of letting it rest inside the freezer, it is holding consistent temps between 62 and 64 and my...

need help with my temp controller

I have a Johnson Control A419 hooked to a chest freezer. I've done trial runs at different temperatures and it has worked great. Now, today, when I finally try to put it to use for brewing, it is not cooperating. I earlier today, I had the set point at 63 with a differential of 1 and I got...

berries in the kettle... big mistake?

I've been freezing a few here and there, little by little throughout the growing season, until I had a pound. we probably pick close to a quart a day, when they're at their peak but I'm usually lucky if I get a small handful, once my three year old daughter is done with them ;) It seems that...

berries in the kettle... big mistake?

yeah, the gravity came in higher than I'd expected. I am guessing somewhere around 8%, when it's all said and done. Is there such a thing as "Imperial Saison"? haha... I'm still fairly new to brewing but very new to all grain. Until this batch, I've done 3 stove top BIAB batches and, given my...

Sierra Nevada Hoptimum... how good is it?

I think my thing with Summerfest is that I've been so focused on IPAs over the last few years, and Imperial Stouts, in the late fall/winter, that I've gotten used to very assertive flavors in beer and beers that are a little more subtle, don't seem to register as high. I've been working on...

berries in the kettle... big mistake?

Thank you very much for the input. Ideally, I would rack onto the raspberries in the secondary and then transfer to a tertiary... but, I only have one 3 gal carboy and it's a little hard for me to justify buying another, just for this batch, as it's not something that I would see myself using...

Sierra Nevada Hoptimum... how good is it?

I'm not a big "seasonal" guy, but I'm a big fan of SN's seasonals. Summerfest is good but I wouldn't go out of my way to get it. Tumbler, Celebration, and Ruthless Rye, however, are outstanding. I'm looking forward to grabbing a case of Tumbler soon.

Things one guy should NEVER say to another guy

it was never said directly to me, thankfully, but there was a surveyor at my old job that would take work to our CAD techs and ask "can I slide this in your pipeline?"

berries in the kettle... big mistake?

All, Normally I wouldn't repost the same question, but I put this up on the techniques column and didn't get much feedback. So I thought maybe this would be the more appropriate forum for it. My original post: I brewed a berry saison on Sunday. This is both my first saison and first...

Sierra Nevada Hoptimum... how good is it?

I like all kinds, really. I know that that probably sounds like I'm avoiding the question with a lackluster answer, but I like to switch it up. I have always liked trying different things. For the last two years or so, IPAs have definitely been my favorite style but, as we all know, and as you...

Sierra Nevada Hoptimum... how good is it?

mtyquinn, unfortunately, here in the great Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, our beer needs to be purchased at a beer distributor and has to be bought by the case. Thankfully, I live 3 miles from Maryland and can pick up sixers and four packs, easily. All of my go-to places in MD are already sold...

berries in the kettle. big mistake?

I brewed a berry saison on Sunday. This is both my first saison and first fruit beer, so I'm not 100% what to expect with either. I had read that if you put the fruit in the kettle or in the primary, you will get a "hint" of the fruit, as a lot of it would ferment out and, if you really want...

Sierra Nevada Hoptimum... how good is it?

Ok, so I've heard some talk about how good Hoptimum is. I screwed around long enough that all of my local beer shops are out of it. I found one place that still has some and it's here in Pennsylvania... which means I need to buy a whole case of it. I'm always a little leary about buying a...
