    Watney's Red Barrel Clone

I've had a request from a neighbor to make a Watney's red barrel clone. I am too young to have had Red Barrel, but I was wondering if there was a cline recipe that exists or if anyone here has one. Thanks!

    Went to see a "professional"

The guy had plent of good info, but it wasn't anything that you can't find either here or within the literature. It was a basic talk on the history of beer as well as an introduction to the mash process and the various isomers of the acids found in hops. Either way, it was nice to see...

    Went to see a "professional"

here are a couple websites that concur with the myth theory...however, you guys are right in that probably no one can really know. most sites reference George Watson's The Compleat English Brewer to support their claims. Beervana: The IPA Myth Myth 4: George Hodgson invented IPA to...

    Went to see a "professional"

Alright all, I'm throwing this out there for some help on gathering legitimate references to support my argument... I'm not sure if I'm in the right spot...I apologize if not. I went to a local professional meeting tonight than had a talk on the chemistry of brewing beer. Prior to the talk, a...

    Questions on fresh grape wine

Alright.... a couple quick questions with using fresh grapes for wine. I have some carbernet grapes coming from CA to my LHBS. 1) Is there a particular strain of yeast that would be best suited for this grape? 2) What gravity range is optimum for the transfer to the secondary? 3) How...

    No siphon in dip tube

I've put together a dip tube for my keggle using 1/2" copper tubing with a 90° elbow on the end. The tubing is fastened to the bulkhead with a compression fitting. All fittings are tight and sealed with teflon tape. The problem is that the water in my test run stops flowing at the bulkhead...

    Keggle False Bottom Size

I am putting the finishing touches on my brew structure and getting my three keggles prepped for brewing and I was wondering if a 15" false botom is necessary for the false bottom or if a 12" will suffice? Any input is welcome. Thanks

    Plumbing Propane

Well, I've been slowly putting my 2 - tier brewstand and I am to the point of plumbing propane. I could really use some guidance on how to do this. Is there a way to use the flex tubing from my turkey fryers to go straight into the black pipe? If so, what sort of fittings do I need? Do I need a...

How do you determine the AA%?

I don't think that a GC will be required for that procedure. From the looks of it, you can get by with an old Spec20. These can be actually quite affordable, and are very easy to use.

    Let's talk pumps

I am in the process of upgrading my brewery and will soon require a pump. Just curious as to what everyone uses, if the like it, and how much it costed. Thanks.

    Air tight mash tun

Perhaps I wasn't clear, I apologize. My thought process behind this was to eliminate HSA by putting the entire system under nitrogen. If the system is being purged by N2, it cannot create a vacuum and collapse. Also, if no O2 is present, then one could stir the mash, creating a more efficient...

    Air tight mash tun

Has anyone put any thought into creating an airtight mashtun? If the tun were airtight, then theoretically one could blanket the system with nitrogen and prevent any oxidation from occurring. This would be very advantageous. Would one be able to convert a keg into a system like this? Just an...

    Overflowing fermentation

After finishing my most recent all grain batch on Saturday, I had 6.5 - 7 gallons of fermentable wort. Because of this, I used a 7.5 gallon bucket for the fermentation. This morning I went to check and the airlock was filled with beer, and there was beer all over the lid of the bucket. I was...

    Homegrown Hops?

This is a question for anybody who grows their own hops. How much (give or take) does a single hops plant produce in a given year?

    Mash Schedule

I actually brewed this beer with beer Rph. We have been doing step mashes for all of our batches thus far with direct heat. What would be altered in the beer via your route FSR? Also, a little note, we just moved from Hudsonville in the past year. There's a good sized brewing community in the...

    Ideas for reducing costs

Something that has yet to be mentioned is purchasing some hops rhizomes. Growing a high alpha acid hops along with a universal flavor/aroma hops could save you $5-$10/batch. I plan on planting some come springtime.
