Anyone use the Stainless Steel Wort Chiller?

I heard a news blurb about researchers exploring the antimicrobial properties of copper.

Got my kegs back.. what do you think

Use a steel wire brush (about the size of a tooth brush) to clean the welds. The brush does not have to be stainless. You’ll be surprised how clean the welds look afterward. I wouldn’t grind anything. In welding preparation is critical—who drilled the holes? If one hole was larger than the...

Anyone use the Stainless Steel Wort Chiller?

BTW using a five gallon bucket with a valve on the side near the bottom filled with ice as a pre-chiller could solve the problem. It would cost very little, too.

Anyone use the Stainless Steel Wort Chiller?

There are a lot of posts here about people making their own chiller using half inch copper refrigeration tubing. If you went with 50 ft. of 3/8 inch tubing it might cost $50 for everything. You might want to search this section of the site before you spend $90.

    Copper Perforated False Bottom?

If your MLT is a plastic cooler I don't see a problem. If you have an ss or aluminum MLT you will have to remove the bottom and store it separately--copper can corrode if left in constant contact with a dissimilar metal.

    See my Wort Chiller

Great, thanks. That's all I needed to know.

    See my Wort Chiller

I just finished my immersion chiller and want to find hose that won't melt while the chiller is being sterilized in the boiling wort.

    See my Wort Chiller

Was this type of plastic tubing recommended for use with an immersion chiller? The chiller gets hot while being sterilized in the boiling wort. My chiller is finished except for the plastic ends so I could use some advice on this issue.

    QDs teflon tape?

Be sure to keep the tape away from where the threads start on the male connector especially with gas connectors. Pieces of tape can end up clogging the small openings that allow the gas equipment to function. This is why paste is recommended for gas lines.

How much did you pay for welding your keggle?

Hi JDS, ss is such a poor conductor of heat that I can pick up an ss keggle with 11 gallons of wort at full boil with bare hands (using the handles at the top of the keg). I would expect a fitting brazed on the side of a keggle about an inch from the base that is heated to be subjected to...

How much did you pay for welding your keggle?

Has there been a discussion about brazing these fittings to an ss keggle? I know someone who had this done and he's had no problems. It will work as long as the design of the fitting is appropriate for this process.

    IC with Soldered Joints

FYI: I'm going to use half inch straight pipe--the kind that can't be bent easily. There might be as many as twelve soldered joints immersed in the wort. Thanks everyone for your input.

    IC with Soldered Joints

I have been considering making an immersion chiller out of half inch copper pipe and was wondering if exposing boiling wort to the soldered joints would pose some sort of health hazard or create off flavors. The increase in volume and decrease in cost seem substantial and my guess is tubing has...

    Mash Tun Manifold Question

You should be able to use a cylindrical file to sand the bottom edges of the holes. Turkey fryers might still be on close out at places like Lowes or Home Depot. I saw a scratch and dent at Lowes a few weeks ago.

    Mash Tun Manifold Question

When it comes to designing and making equipment there are a lot of exceptionally competent people on this website. I marvel at some of the pictures people post of their homemade equipment--it's no wonder so many companies that make home brewing equipment are no longer in business. All this DIY...

    Mash Tun Manifold Question

How many hours did it take you to drill all those holes? Looks really precise to me.

    SS immersion chiller?

I can wrap my hands around the handles of a keggle with 11 gallons of boiling wort in it because SS is such a poor conductor of heat. Someone commented on another post that once an immersion chiller reaches the same temperature as the wort the wall thickness of the tubing is no longer a factor...

    Aluminum Immersion Chiller

I discussed this thin-walled aluminum tubing with a friend who had used it for an automotive application. He told me it would kink and even collapse when he tried to bend it. The part he made with it failed and he eventually found some aluminum tubing with a thicker sidewall—this thicker stuff...

    Aluminum Immersion Chiller

I'll be sure to post the results if I try this, but it might be a month or more.
