    Washing Bottles

Right after I pour the bottle gets rinsed and shaken then rinsed one more time with hot water. A quick peek and if I see a nice clean insides it goes on the bottle tree. When the bottle tree is full I slip the entire thing into one of those very large plastic trash bags and put it aside till...

    Extract vs All grain....

After a few decades of homebrewing I have gone full cycle. From way back when and a 12 gallon stone crock a few cans of Hopped Blue Ribbon malt and a chunk of yeast from the local bakery then on to fancy prehopped can kits, then to partial grain and finally to a 50 quart mash tun and all...

Homebrew Scale: Pumping Beer Long Distances

50 Level feet will not require that much pressure so most any food safe hose is fine. You are dealing with sweet cooled wort and a 50 foot run will require very careful sanitation even more than a 50 foot keg to tap run would. Look into beer line cleaning equipment. OMO bosco

    Old chemical tanks

If Kodak was the last to use them I'd be pretty sure they would be pretty clean. ( PRETTY SURE ? ).. Look for pitting or caked on gunk. This is a link to MSDS info for all the Kodak chemicals used.. Most are benign (acids, very soluble salts and the like) and clean up with just water...

    Bought my first decent knives

I sold Cutco back in 1969. It helped put me through college.. Great knives. I still remember some of the sales pitch. Good ole Mary (the generic name we used). bosco

    dig cooper fermenter kit

I have the new one and use it the most. If I want to get another brew going while it's full I go to the buckets. Huge volume, no need for airlock, no blow offs and a handy spigot for samples or racking to the bottling bucket. bosco

    Cleaning bottles

Since I don't use any bottles that weren't in my pipeline and I rinse each very carefully once I pour I don't do the PBW. If I do need to use bottles not from the pipeline I would do the same as Unionrdr. Once I rinse my bottles after the pour I let them drain on my tree and there they sit...

    Normal bottling volume

Could be you are pushing your fermenting time a little, or the yeast you are using may not be a strong flocutater (sp). I let my ales ferment out for about 3 weeks and the trub layer is compact and usually less than 1/4 gallon. I rack off till I hit the trub and stop before any gets into the...

Cooling my wort in the snow?

Put it in a tub filled with snow, a little water an a few pounds of salt. This will go way below freezing temp (like in an ice cream churn) and the time will be greatly reduced if you keep the wort moving. bosco

    Cleaning bottles

Good post.. It only take a second to look inside each bottle. Even store bought bottles could have creepy crawly web in the corner somewhere. The final step before bottling is always (at least for me) the StarSan spray and I bottle while the insides are still wet with StarSan. OMO bosco

    New brewer developing his palate

Developing a palate or taste for beers is a process that is very individual and learned by trial and error over a period of time. Once you have learned what types or styles of beer you prefer then the different recipes dealing with grains, adjuncts, yeasts and methods of the brewing process...

    Sauerkraut and ... ??

It's great. You can get almost every leaf off the cabbage unlike when I did it by boiling. Now I can make a bunch of golumbki or golubtsy or whatever you want to call them at a moments notice (aside from the cooking time). I always use hand cut pork and beef for the filling, as it really...

    Sauerkraut and ... ??

I always have a well cored out head of cabbage or two (wrapped tightly in Saran wrap) in the deep freeze. Take it out and plunk in a pot of hot water to thaw. EVERY leaf comes off perfectly, right down to the center. Saves a ton of time, no more boiling or blanching and burned...

    Help with odd bottle please.

Nice idea, however I would have a little worry as to the bottle's ability to stand up to the pressure of your beer. Probably??? fine if used as a growler, where a lot of initial pressure is relieved when it's filled, but for bottle carbing ??? It was designed for a non carbed drink so I would...

Finings in a 2 can kit?

See Tip #4 If you let the beer ferment for a week after the specific gravity has stabilized you will have a very clear beer to put into your bottles. THE INSTRUCTIONS always tend to rush you into bottling so you will get started on another kit. I've used Cooper's carbonating drops before...
