Random Trios: A thing for clubs to do

In case there are any people in clubs looking for a fun thing to do: mine (the Niagara Association of Homebrewers/NAH) just started the second go-round of its Random Trios. The idea: take everyone in the club and split them into groups of three (I wrote a script to make this easy). Then you...

    Buffalo Brewfest 2010

Anyone going? It's this Friday. They seem really good at addressing complaints: after the sardine tin that was 2008 they opened up HSBC last year, and this year they have more breweries (Ommegang, DFH, Stone, Victory, etc) and have asked everyone to bring something special. I'll be there...

What has two thumbs and is going pro?

THIS GUY, BABY. Community Beer Works. Buffalo, NY, nanobrewery. Currently in all sorts of planning, as you might imagine. I'm one of 6-7 people. We're close to a location, close to a logo and aren't worrying about the specifics of beer yet (though we know it'll be 1bbl to start, and hopefully...

Bacon beer. Yeah. I said it.

My friend recently moved back to town and has been interested in brewing with me. He loves the bacon vodka idea in olllllo's sig, so we'll be making some of that, and also has demanded that we make bacon beer. Now, before you throw up in your mouth a bit, I don't think it's that dumb of an...

    Buffalo Brewfest 09

I really hope it's just suffering from poor website updates because the list of breweries doesn't really look at that hot. Maybe I'm just jaded, but they can't even get DFH? If you're going, I'll be there with Beer-O-Vision so look for the guy in front of a camera.

Hey Chicago, let's get a beer!

Here's the deal: I'm in town for the American Libraries Association conference and my wife flies back tomorrow. I'm going to Midway with her, and that Orange line meets up wiu the Red line and then it's just a straight shot to the Hop Leaf... I'm going to get there around 7, maybe? Leaving...

Always look on the bright side of life

You didn't boil off an extra gallon, you made it extra special. That's not an infection, it's a farmhouse. There have to be more, right?

    The Bertram Palm

I assumed that most people had heard about this already, as it's been going around the beer blogs like crazy, but: the flowers of the Bertram Palm can create an alcoholic liquid up to 3.8% abv. This little bit of magic uses the help of newly discovered yeasts to turn its nectar into alcohol...

    'Posthumous Pale Ale' on Shirt.Woot

I wish I would have found out about this yesterday, as the daily shirt on Shirt.Woot is $10 with free shipping. However, after some looking around I found that you can order shirts after their day has gone for $15. Considering it's free shipping, that's still not too bad. Anyway, the shirt in...

    Irish Red

There seems to be a surprising lack of information on this style around... nothing in Designing Great Beers, and only a few recipes here. I found jezter's BeyerDyke Irish Red, but when I plug the data into BeerAlchemy I get a lot higher OG, FG, etc. Beerrific gave me a good one that I've...

Fermentation's not stuck, it just never started

Sadly, I think the technique on my first mead (the Antipodal Mead from TCJOHB) left a lot to be desired. I 'brewed' it on Monday, but I was late meeting SWMBO for a movie and it was still to hot to pitch my smack pack (the Wyeast Sweet Mead), so I tossed on an airlock and left. When I got home...

    My bottles just won't carb...

I'm beginning to think that there's an anti-carb aura in my house. My first brew was a porter, extract with steeping grains. Barely carbed but I thought it might be because I screwed up elsewhere (didn't boil long enough) My second was a raspberry wheat, extract with raspberry flavoring...

Broadcast your brewing to the intertubes

It seems as though my idea of broadcasting my first AG through streaming video was well received; much more so than I thought it'd be, and thanks again to everyone for watching. Enough people seemed interested, so I thought I'd write a tutorial. I had a lot of equipment, as my theory is...

Brewing my first AG... live on the internet

Today I'm taking the plunge and doing Ed's Haus Ale. I also realized that (a) I am a geek and (b) have the equipment, so I'm streaming a video feed of it. I also went ahead and figured out how to splice music into my audio (after a request from nugget in IRC), so you can listen to The Continuing...

    Slightly too sweet

I've been meaning to ask this question for a while, and I think I have it figured out, but... My first brew was a porter (extract using dry and liquid with steeping grains). It was in primary for a week, secondary for two, and was bottled probably over a month ago (I have the dates, but am...

    Simple labels

I saw elsewhere that a good dimension for labels was 3.3x4, so these are roughly that (I think): and And for around the necks, The only problem I have is that the wheat logo is darker than the text, but I'm not sure how pronounced it is outside of my head. I shamelessly...

    Bubbles in my tube

I know that oxidation is bad, but when I was bottling this weekend there were bubbles in my bottling wand/siphon tube. I was bottling out of a bucket with a spigot, but I assume it's because the tube was too long and there was air in there when I started bottling. Is this a really bad thing, or...

    Filling 1L bottles

I know when filling 12oz bottles, you fill it to the top and when you take out the wand the beer level drops to where you want it. I'm planning on getting some 1L flip top bottles to give away to friends/make bottling easier, so will doing the same thing work, or will it not leave enough room?
