    Drilling Stainless Steel Fermenter

I'm trying to drill through the lid of my Ss Brewtech 7 gallon fermenter lid in order to install the pressure transfer fitting. My little Chicago Power Tools cordless drill isn't getting the job done. Neither is my 50 year old corded Black and Decker drill. I'm okay with buying a new drill...

    New To Kegging

I've been resisting kegging for years, but I'm considering making the leap. I don't know what I don't know about what I need to start the process. I found this on Amazon and it looks like a good starting point...

    Final Gravity

I used the Brewer's Friend recipe calculator for a Pecan Stout recipe I plan to make and there seems to be an issue with the estimated final gravity. I suspect it's too high. I tried calculating it with 1 and 2 packets of Nottingham English ale yeast, but it doesn't change the FG. I suspect the...

    Carboy Headspace

Last summer I tried my hand at making a peach wine from scratch. I was trying to make a 3 gallon batch. When I racked the wine off the lees, I wound up with considerably less than 3 gallons. I wound up with about 8 inches of headspace in the 3 gallon carboy. I guess I lost interest in it and...

    Need Help Identifying A Problem

I planted my rhizomes in mid May. They took a while to start growing, but then they did very well. Now I am quite concerned about them. As you can see from the pics below, the leaves started turning brown, shriveling up and falling off. I started applying Sevin spray and doubled up on the...

    Still Cider Questions

As the title implies, I want to make a still cider. Can I use either metabisulphite or campden tablets? Should I use both? Instead of bottling, I am considering use the Fermtech Wine on Tap system. http://www.fermtech.ca/wine%20dispensing/winedisp.html Can anyone think of a reason this...

    Time to Rack to.Secondary

I am making an Island Mist Kit (Green Apple Reisling). This the 8th day and there is still signs of active fermentation (airlock activity). The OG was 1.059. The SG was 1.000 last night. The instructions tell me to rack to the secondary now. Is it safe/advisable to rack now, or should I wait...

    WLP002 English Ale

I made a Lazy Magnolia Southern Pecan Nut Brown Ale this morning. I chose WLP002 because I wanted a low attenuating yeast so the beer would have a malty character. I made a 1.5 L starter. The yeast was very, very chunky or lumpy. I've never used this yeast before and none of the other White...

    Have a Good Laugh

I hope this makes someone laugh . . . It almost made me cry. I brewed my attempt at a Lazy Magnolia Southern Pecan Nut Brown Ale this morning. Everything went great. I got it cooled down very quickly and even remembered to check the gravity before pitching the yeast this time. I was about...

    I am so sick

My daughters asked me to take them to DQ tonight. As soon as we walked in, I saw these for sale ($1, proceeds go to charity.) The only thing I could think of was "Can I ferment in that?" Well... can I? What's wrong with me?

The trouble with hydrometers is . . .

My hydrometer always sticks to the side of my thief, preventing me from getting accurate gravity reading. I usually end up shaking the thief, or pouring the beer into another container in order to get an accurate reading. The trouble with this is that I've probably either added oxygen by...

    Forgetful in my mid-life

I brewed a sweet stout about 36 hours ago. I forgot to add Irish moss and yeast nutrients during the boil. Is it too late to boil a cup of H2O, add both and then add the concoction to the fermenter now?

    Sweet Stout Recipe Help

I am brewing this Sweet Stout this weekend. It's actually a Coffee Vanilla Stout, but since the flavorings will be added to the secondary, I did not add them to the recipe. I usually use Brew Calculus to check my recipes. This time, for whatever reason, I also used Brewer's Friend. The...

    Thermometer Trouble

I am using a battery operated probe thermometer like the one pictured below and I think I have been having problems with it. I didn't realize it until I was chilling my Premium American Lager wort last weekend. The thermometer reading stuck at 85 f and I knew that couldn't be right. So, I...

    First Lager Brew Questions

I am brewing my first lager this weekend. I have a few questions and could use some guidance. Here is my recipe and my yeast calculation. (1) Is there any concern that I am over pitching the yeast? I hope not because my starter is already made. If it is a real concern, is there anything I...

    How Does My Grind Look?

This is my first attempt at milling my own grain. I received my Corona type mill direct from China today. I don't see any whole hulls, but I'm afraid they are shredded too much. This is a caramel malt 40L. Please let me know what you think. Thanx Go Kings Go!

    Delayed Start Starter

If I need to leave my starter in the fridge for a week, should I decant or leave the wort in the jar? It's a 1.5 litre made with WLP840. Thanks.

    CO2 Volume

If I carbonate my American Pale Ale to a level of 2.2, as opposed to the traditional 2.4 - 2.7, will it negatively affect the character or style of my beer. I'm not a fan of carbonation and I've made bottle bombs before and beer I couldn't drink for a half hour after opening. I want to avoid that.
