Lagering and my wort temps have been too cold - is my yeast dead?

Finally have a fridge just for fermenting, so I'm trying my first lager. I have no data regarding my setup, e.g., when my set the temp controller to X, how cold does it really get inside, etc. I have an older temp controller, with a dial for the target temps and the fat probe. After boil, I...

    Cooling wort outside?

It's 10 deg outside. After my boil this AM, I'm tempted to cover the pot and set it out on my patio to cool it, closely monitoring the temp. I'm concerned there's a great reason to not do this, so I'm asking. :)

Taps in Kitchen wall - how to keep cool + protect wall

I've got two taps I plan to mount inside a 2x4 wall, with drywall on either side. Should I build a small, insulated box in which to have the trunk line come up through and connect to the shanks? Should I be worried about condensation and the drywall? The glycol/pump and kegs are...

Attach 5/16" id hose to 1/4" barb - is this really ok?

I got home from my LHBS with all the pieces I need to keg. I didn't realize until now that the hose they gave me to connect the regulator to the keg is 5/16" id; my pin-lock post has a 1/4" barb, of course. I appreciate it's only 1/16" difference, but I also appreciate we're talking about...

My spin on "Smack pack arrived smacked!"

So my kit arrived in the mail a few weeks ago. The Wyeast pack was separate from the other parts, and as I put it in the fridge I thought "man, it seems like this pack is already 50% inflated". Note this was my first smack pack. I'm ready to brew this weekend and need to do a starter for this...

    Sanitizing your fermenter

Two questions: 1 do you siphon sanitizer from a bucket or dump it in through a funnel? 2 do you make enough sanitizer for all 6.5 gal or swirl 5 gallons around a bit and assume that'll do?

    Why use liquid yeast?

If there's no point in making a yeast starter with dry yeast, why not always use dry yeast? Why ever use liquid? Given the popularity of liquid, I'm sure there's a reason. Is there a good FAQ/wiki somewhere?

Pitched a starter with dry yeast - to toss or not to toss?

I rushed things a bit and was all fired up about a yeast starter, only to learn tonight that using a dry yeast to do this is flat out a "no no", as it's actually doing damage. Should I toss the starter?
