    Seeking Alabama hop grower

I know this is an older thread, but where did you find local grain? I've been growing hops a couple years and I've captured wild yeasts in my back yard (way too much acetone when young, but mellows considerably and more fruity with age), but I've yet to find any local grain.

    pest control

Plant a small garden with something the critters like more than the hops! My first season I had insects galore. This season I planted a small 10 x 10 vegetable garden near my trellis, and unintentionally cut down pests by more than 50%. Now if I could just them off my tomatoes...

    Secondary Growth?

I'm in my second year of growing, and at this point I've already had 3X or more the harvest from my first season (I'm growing in Alabama, so they seem to be ready sooner). Now I'm seeing a TON more secondary growth and more burrs forming than my initial harvests...is this normal? Haven't found a...

    WLP001 Braggot

Is this a decent choice for a braggot? 3 gallons, 1.108 is est OG. I like the yeast because it is clean, but can it handle the alcohol? Using 1 vial in 3 gallon batch. Also tossing the idea of using 2 packs of US-05...

    DIY Fermenter on the Cheap!

Not sure aboutletting the lids loose, but the ease and inexpensiveness of installing the airlock has me using the airlock. I dont use my just for secondary (although with my Hefe, I'm going to do the secondary with a gallon of the wort and some watermelon), but for smaller and experimental...

    DIY Fermenter on the Cheap!

My LHBS had the gaskets, but I'm sure a hardware store would have them as well...

    DIY Fermenter on the Cheap!

I got the smell out of the jar fairly easily after a couple soaks in PBW, but the lid was another issue. On the advice of a friend, I put the lids in a shallow dish of water in the sun all day and let the UV do the trick. Worked like a charm. I was struggling with getting the smell out of the...

    Cheap Fermenter?

I made this for around $1.10, using a gallon pickle jar. All I paid for was a rubber gasket and an airlock...

    DIY Fermenter on the Cheap!

If made a bunch of these, for around $1.10 each. Took a gallon pickle jar, drilled a hole for a gasket and popped in an air lock. I plan to use them for small batch experiments and what not. All you have to buy is the gasket and the air lock. Cheers!

First All Grain - White Specks in Wort?

Thanks, makes me a lot less apprehensive about what's in the tank!

First All Grain - White Specks in Wort?

I made my first go at all grain last night, and after I was transfering to fermenter from the brew pot, I was noticing a lot of small while specks or flecks in the wort. I noticed some coming to the surface during the boil and forming a little scum, but I skimmed them all off (or so I thought)...
