    Cloudy brew water

I am new to adjusting my brew water and today was the first time I needed to use calcium carbonate. I noticed my water was very cloudy after adding it. Almost like it never fully dissolved. Will this affect the clarity of the finished product. Sent from my iPhone using Home Brew

Tannin extraction with direct fired rims

I just tasted my first beer from my new brutus 10 style brew stand. The beer has a grainy almost grassy taste. The only thing i can think is that the taste is from tannins. I don't know if it is from a constant recirculation during the entire mash. The only other thing i could think of was over...

    Direct fire rims

I am almost finished with my single tier brew stand which is a direct fired rims. I am curious what people are using to recirculate. Should I just set the recirculating hose on top of the grain bed or use some type of sparge arm. Sent from my iPhone using Home Brew

    Banjo burner problems

I posted this under DIY originally and thought I would try my luck here. I just finished a Brutus 10 style brew stand with banjo burners (Bg-14). It is automated with Honeywell 8200 valve and standing pilot lights. The problem is that when the controller shuts the burner off I get a loud pop...

I just finished a Brutus 10 style brew stand with banjo burners (Bg-14). It is automated with Honeywell 8200 valve and standing pilot lights. The problem is that when the controller shuts the burner off I get a loud pop. Almost like a back fire. Didn't know if anyone else was experiencing this...

    Keggle mash tun recirculation

I am getting ready to upgrade from a cooler to a direct fired keggle mash tun. I plan on insulated with reflectix but also want the ability to recirculate for multiple step mashes. I will be using a pump and camlocks on silicone tubing. Where is the best place for a port at the top of the...

    Filling Growlers

Ok this is probably a stupid question but here goes. I filled about 8 growlers today for gifts. The beer was forced carbed in a keg. I normally try to cap on foam but these filled so nicely i hardly got any foam so most of the growlers are filled to the top with very little head space. Will the...

    First lager

So i brewed my first lager last week and i'm not sure if everything is on track. It was an oktoberfest and my yeast was wlp820. My OG was 1.061. I pitched at about 50 degrees and fermented around 54. At five days in my gravity was 1.030 so i raised the temp to 61 for a d-rest. Today my gravity...

    NB Tall Boy Kettle

I wanted to get opinions on the new tall boy kettles from northern brewer. I just received a 15 gal and after mounting my ball valve and sight glass i noticed the pot was leaking from both handles at the top. One more than the other. I also noticed the pot is starting to rust in some spots. Has...

    Brew water testing

Just wanted to see if anyone is using an aquarium or pool test kit to test the calcium carbonate/alkalinity. And if so, how accurate it was.

    Whirlpool wort without a pump

I was just wondering if anyone is having any success whirl pooling wort with out the use of a pump. I'm trying to separate my cold break and hop material better. I have just been stirring vigorously for a few minutes then letting it set for 30 min prior to draining. The cold break and hop...

    Strange color yeast

Yesterday I transfered an amber ale into my carboy. I noticed that the yeast cake and dried krausen were a very dark color, almost gray to dark brown. I have brewed a lot of beer and never noticed this color before. Almost all of my yeast cakes are a creamy tan color. This was reconstituted...

    RIMS thermometer placement

I know this subject has been talked about before but I cannot find a clear answer. I am in the process of building a single tier rims cart. I will be using a keggle with a false bottom for my mash tun. Where is the best place to monitor mash temps. I have read the best place is right at the ball...

    Weldless galvanized brew cart

Wanted to find out if any one has had issues with heating the galvanized steel on the brew cart that have been posted on this site. I think it looks like a great idea and wanted to do one myself. I just didn't know how bad the fumes were.

What is the best digital thermometer?

I wanted to know what everyone is using for a thermometer with their cooler mash tun. I want to get a new one but thought I would get everyone's suggestion. My only request would be one that reads fast.
