    Efficeincy Help

I batch sparge and get mid to upper 80's % extraction repeatedly. Haven't seen a continuous sparging system that does the same or better.

    Efficeincy Help

Would increase water to 1.75 qt/lb for sach rest followed by enough sparge water to cover grain bed by at least 2 inches. Possibly there's not enough water to rinse the grains.

    Efficeincy Help

How big is your mash tun? What is the depth of water that covers the grain during the sach rest? What is the before and after temperature for the sach rest?

Brewhouse efficiency down when brewing IPA

So leaf hops absorbed the gravity points (sugars) vs wort? Might need a biochemist to elaborate on this.

    Maximizing Efficiency when Batch Sparging

Apparently I've been missed by HBT forum so might as well return post here. Haven't measured the effects of stirring (or not stirring) before run off but when in doubt - stir. That said - still knocking out upper 80s % extraction efficiency thanks to tips from Mr. Denny. Was able to "coax" the...

    Maximizing Efficiency when Batch Sparging

Thanks again Denny. I remembered to fully open the faucet whilst draining the wort after sach rest and didn't get a stuck drain when mashing an OG of 1.095. :rockin: I got stuck sparges on previous batches with high OG.

Never brewed - wanting to jump right into all grain

I read Palmer's book and a couple months later brewed all grain using 5 gallon round cooler and 5 gallon boil kettle. It's not difficult if you are systematic and pay attention. By the way, I never brewed before and went all grain 1st time out. Go for it. :)

Wyeast 1217? Not familiar with that strain.

    Efficiency drop mashing more grain

Yes more sparge water would increase extraction but already at max volume for boil kettle. Even with a larger kettle the added boil time would make for quite a long brew day which isn't something I would like to do regularly.

    Efficiency drop mashing more grain

Thanks to Denny (primarily) all grain extraction efficiency has improved to 85+% consistently. Since the improvement past brews have been 1.075 or less OG. Recently brewing batches with OG 1.090+ extraction efficiency has dropped to 80-85%. Mash equipment consists of 5 gallon round cooler and...

    improving efficiency

Sticking to the manifold after reading the following thread. https://www.homebrewtalk.com/f36/ss-braid-vs-cpvc-manifold-297690/index2.html

    improving efficiency

Made a IIPA using almost 10 lbs of grain mashed in a 5 gallon igloo circular cooler. Got an 87% extraction vs the regular 90%. Think an upgraded wooden mash paddle over the flimsy plastic one would have helped stirring here. Might try a small braid vs the cpvc manifold since there seems to...

    New mill=way better efficiency!

Don't have a mill yet so have to break out the rolling pin for the un-cracked grains. :cross:

How big or small a mash tun?

Too big a mash tun (cooler) as compared to grain bill makes it more difficult to hold mash temps.

Florida Sale or Trade: 2012 Cascade Pellet hops

Per USPS website, estimating ~$9 for shipping by large envelope but would need to confirm at a branch office.
