Mash pH way low.. Where did I go wrong?

They are nice guys, but their beer... well they are nice guys :D To follow up on this.. I finally got around to testing the meters stability yesterday. I calibrated the meter and put the meter back in 4.0 pH buffer solution and watched the readings for about 10 minutes. The readings...

    Measuring Calcium Chloride

Just to make sure I'm doing this right. I took a 250ml flask, added 20g of CaCl2, and added distilled water to the 200ml mark. Measured my gravity and it was at 1.070. Enter that into the formula and I get 86.07 g/L. So if I need 6g of CaCl2 to brew I'd add 6g/86g/L = .069L (69ml), right?

Mash pH way low.. Where did I go wrong?

Whatever generic solution that came with the meter. I'll have to look around for some bigger bottles. These are 2oz at most. Guys at the brewery dumped mine, washed out the containers, and refilled with their solution. Nice guys, and it always when you bring a few homebrews to share. :D

Mash pH way low.. Where did I go wrong?

quick update... Ran by the local brewery today. We measured a sample with two of their pH meters, then measured with mine. The pH reading was the same on both of their meters, but my meter was .2 lower. I ran through the calibration routine using the 4.0 and 7.0 solution that came with my...

Mash pH way low.. Where did I go wrong?

I'm in agreement with Gavin. This has to be some sort of sampling/measurement error on my part. The measures of grain/minerals/water should all be accurate. I measured all but the specialty grains myself. I don't keep those on hand so I source those from the local homebrew shop. I've called a...

Mash pH way low.. Where did I go wrong?

This one Omega PHH-7011. Beer is good, not great, but we always strive for better don't we. :mug: Efficiency is typically in the low to mid 70s. I calibrated twice following the directions that came with the meter. I have an RO water system at home the total disolved solids were 7ppm and the...

Mash pH way low.. Where did I go wrong?

Ive been using Bru'n Water to calculate my salts and mash pH for a year or so now, but only recently purchase a pH meter. Yesterday was the second brew I've tested the mash pH on and both have been substantially low (-.4 and -.6) I don't think this is a software issue because three different...

Hill Farmstead Ephraim/Edward Clone (A.K.A. Noob Needs Some Help)

You'll have to click the stop button in your browser after the page loads to keep the page from redirecting. I thought the videos on the page didn't work, bc they have never loaded for me before yesterday and of course now they don't load today.

Hill Farmstead Ephraim/Edward Clone (A.K.A. Noob Needs Some Help)

Great looking beer! :mug: I don't have a lot to add, except that on Shaun's original blog there were two videos. One of videos is Shaun and Co preparing for the first Hill Farmstead brew day. Shaun briefly speaks to someone who is measuring out specialty grains for the batch from a Weyermann...

Achieving a silky/pillowy/creamy mouthfeel (a la Hill Farmstead)?

Thanks! I'll give it a shot this week. I was planning on brewing a DIPA this week for a local festival, but my hop order has been stuck somewhere in Idaho for almost a week with all of the wild fires. May end up brewing a Mosaic/Centennial/Amarillo APA instead. btw this 'Strawberry Vanilla...

Achieving a silky/pillowy/creamy mouthfeel (a la Hill Farmstead)?

Wanted to stop in and say thanks to everyone who has contributed here. I've been experimenting with these same variables (Mash/Final pH, water, yeast) for the past two years and have arrived at a lot of the same conclusions as you guys. It's great to find some like minded folks and hope I...

    Dixie Cup XXV

A friend and I are heading to Houston tomorrow for the Dixie Cup. :rockin: Neither one of us have been to a homebrew competition before so we don't really know what to expect. We're just excited to be able go and hangout with other beer nerds for the weekend. So I'll see you guys there...

    Brew Kettle Question

Hey Guys, I purchased a 15 gallon brew kettle from MoreBeer a few weeks back and last night was the first chance I've had to use it. During cleanup I noticed a small black spot on the kettle wall. I took some bar keepers friend and tried to scrub it off with no luck. It looks like the...
