Help with post cancer celebration brew

I have not posted or been around for awhile. In January I was diagnosed with Stage IV Colon Cancer. After a surgery on the colon I began chemotherapy. I was told to stay away from alcohol during chemo and I have (almost). Part way through treatment they found metastatic tumors on my liver...

Calling All CPAs - Beer Tax Deductible?

Ok, I'm just spitballing here. Here me out. I have a theory. I have recently set up a blog where I review new beers I try, new books about beer, places I drink beer etc. Lets say I throw up a few google ads, Amazon Ads, maybe I get lucky down the road and generate traffic warranting...

    Help On CO2 source

I have been buying CO2 from the same welding supply place for about a year. They only charge $4-$5 and refill while I wait. Today they said that they can no longer let me take a full CO2 tank unless I have an open truck? I cannot even pick it up in a truck with a shell! Anyone else have this...

    How To Score A Beer?

There does not appear to be a standard, but is there some rule of thumb in the beer tasting world on scoring a beer? I see that homebrew competitions use a 50 point scale with varying values for aroma, appearance, flavor, mouthfeel, and overall. Beer Magazine uses a 100 point scale spread...

Help - quick corona mill question

I usually buy my grains milled. Unfortunately, on a recent AHS purchase I forgot to choose the milled option. So, I bought a cheap corona mill, figured I could use it. The new mill has a strong petroleum oil kind of smell. I assume as a lubricant or anti rust agent. Should I wash or should...

What do you pay for 50 lbs. 2 row?

I am wanting to buy some bulk grain. Morebeer has 50 lbs for $32 which seems like a great price, but it costs $22 to get it to Utah. The homebrew store in SLC sells 50 lbs for 48.50 and I wil be in town anyway in a few weeks. Is this a decent price? Any other options out there?

    2nd AG batch question

My 2nd batch AG is going to be Northern Brewers Cream Ale kit. I understand the mash at 150+ routine. But the instructions say 20 min at 122 degrees then 60 min at 152 degrees. Why and how do you do this? any thoughts?

    Garden Hose Water?

I did my first AG over the weekend and hauled water out to brew. The garden hose is right there. My gut tells me not to use it. Can you? I know California has some silly rule about drinking from a garden hose but the rest of us do it all summer long. What do you think?

    First AG questions

Did my first AG yesterday. A few problems understanding how my new burner worked caused me alot of delay. But I think everything worked out ok. 4 questions: 1. My stove never would boil very heavy but this propane burner will. On your boil should it be just a mild boil or a full rolling...

    DIY MLT Help

Woo Hoo. I had the fortune to take third place in a poker tournament last night raking in $1120. So what better way to put it to use than getting an AG setup going? Rubbermaid cooler, 40 quart pot, and Bayou Classic SQ14. I went and purchased the equipment to build an MLT. I bought the...

Is there a good basic guide to kegging?

Is there anything on the web or a book? I have a 4 keg system with 5lb co2, a manifold directing the air and picnic taps. I generally put new beer in at about 20 - 30 psi for a few days then back it down for serving. However, it seems like I usually get a big glass of foam and the beer tastes...

    DIY Immersion Chiller help

i have been debating if I can actually build a chiller cheaper than I can buy one. Even with the price of copper it looks like I can. What is the best size of copper tubing? I have seen 3/8 and 1/2? Also, at the store, I have seen "type L" tubing. What is "Type L"? I think the best deal I...

I am Digging The Winter Ale

Love this time of year. Started with the Sam Adams Winter Lager which is ok. But then the Sierra Nevada Celebration Ale hits the market and is really good. I also recently tried New Belgian's 2 below which is quite nice. Full Sail Wassail a little darker but pretty good. Can you suggest...

Belgian Pale supposed to be sour?

I have been trying to brew a few different styles including some that I am not very familiar with. I brewed the belgian pale extract kit from morebeer and used white labs abbey 530. It has a sour taste. I wasn't sure that I liked it at first, but it has kind of grown on me. Is it supposed...

    Microbrewery Essentials

I know I know another "start your own brewery on a dream and a prayer" thread. I am interested in learning more about small scale brewing in a micro or brew pub environment. Right now my experience is limited to extract w/specialty grain brewing. So, I would like to know, what is the bare...

    Brew on premises?

Has anyone ever used a Brew On Premises establishment? I was aware of one in Montana a while back that did not make a go of it. It seems like it could be a pretty cool business if it had kind of a hang out atmosphere. Just wondering if anyone has been successful with this business model.
