    A message to extract brewers.

I hope this does not come across the wrong way to some, as that is not my intention. I am by no means a beer snob and enjoy the hobby for what it is. If you brew something you like, thats all that matters. I have been absent here for about a year as I experienced with different ways to brew...

    What style is this?

I brewed a random batch and need help figuring out what style. The reason is that I just took my first gravity sample and its by far the best beer I have brewed. So far. Here is the recipe. 10 lbs of Maris Otter, 4 lbs of Vienna, 1lb of chocolate malt, 1 lb of roasted malt. East Kent...

    Wyeast London Ale Not Fermenting?

Hello All, Its been nearly 24 hrs since pitching my Wyeast London Ale and it appears to be doing nothing. Its sitting at 18C. This is also my first time using this yeast. Is this normal? Usually with dry yeast I would start seeing some krausen building up, but it appears to be doing nothing.

    Dry Hop Selection

I have an Ale I want to dry hop. Its just a simple PA with 2oz of cascade. A bit of vienna in the mix, pitched with S-05. OG 1046. I have hops in my freezer from a group buy and an empty carboy. I want to rack to secondary and dry hop. My question is what will go good with cascade? 1)...

    Newb Keg Foam Question

Hello. I did a bit of searching but I still need some advice. I put two kegs on tap on Sunday. I forced carbed em both. As of today I am still pouring a lot of foam. My kegs are at 2-5C and sitting at 9PSI. I bought the kegerator at a local craft brew house and they sell a lot of em and even...

    Malting Barley

A member of the family who has a farm has offered up free 2 row barley. They grow 300 + acres annually. Of course the problem is, is it worth the trouble to malt? Does anyone have any links that explains how to malt barely at home? Even if I can make some sort of toasted malt or some...

Is this burner stand going to do the trick?

Hello All, I am putting together a BIAB setup and came across this burner at Canadian Tire. Its 60 000BTU, has a cast iron burner and steel frame. Its pretty sturdy. My goal is to get a 10gal brew kettle on this and do BIAB...

Hops in the Great White North

Hello All, Just a couple quick questions regarding hop growing in canada. I have a backyard that backs onto a farmers field and it gets plenty of sunlight. I grow other veggies with excellent success. I worked in a garden center through high school many moons ago so I get the basics on ph...

    Cold Crashing an Ale...

I decided to take my blonde ale that is ready to be bottled and try cold crashing it. It's currently in the garage with my lager at 2C. It's been there for 6 hours and I can notice the beer getting lighter, kinda like the Lager but not as defined. I pitched this with Nottingham Ale Yeast. I...

    Another batch!

I was going to call this Brown Bear Strong Ale, but after I poured a glass, I think I will rename it to Red Bear Strong Ale. This was another mash extract recipe I concocted using a Muntons Midas Touch Ale kit. OG was 1060 FG was 1010. Nice and crisp with a decent kick.

    Nottingham Ale Yeast Question

I used nottingham yeast yesterday for the first time (11g pack). I created a starter like it said on the back of the pack. I added the yeast to 30-32C water as suggested. Let it sit for 15 min without stirring. Then added some of my wort to cool it down slightly as noted. However I didn't let...

Infusion Mash - Highly modified malt?

In Papazian's book he states that infusion mash is great if you are using a highly modified malt, but really doesn't say what that means. I have Pilsner malt from my LHBS. Is the infusion mash method ok for this grain along with some cara-pils?

Grady's Pitch Invastion My second batch !!!!

For my second batch I decided to try a mash extract using Mutons LME, English 2 row, their Yorkshire Bitter kit, and some Gelena leaf hops (OG 1048 FG 1012). I had previously snuck a few out of the fermenter over a week ago, but it was much too green. Still, not bad. It sat for 4 weeks in...

    Conditioning Ales at lower temp

I just bottled the mash extract recipe I made using Muntons Premium Gold Smugglers Ale. So far, so good. I have a room where it's 20-21 degrees, but what are the consequences of letting the ale condition at a lower temp? Its just easier for me to stock them in the basement. Time really isn't...

    Can you freeze dry yeast?

I went out and picked up some supplies yesterday for my next batch and accidentally tossed my Nottingham Ale Yeast into the freezer with my hops. Is it dead? Its been in there for about 30 hrs. I checked the pack and no where on it does it say anything about not putting it in the freezer, but...

Aroma Leaf Hops in Bottling Bucket?

Anyone tried this? If you double bagged in a nylon bag, would there be excess particles in the beer? I was thinking of adding a bit of fuggles to an english ale I am making as I like the aroma. I would just add the priming mix, then top up with the beer, add the bag of hops and give it a very...
