    Disappearing Gravity

Mash today gave me 6.25 gallons at 1.058 (1.041 @ 145F). Before pitching I had 5.0 gallons at 1.064 (1.062 @ 80F). I would have expected to get 1.072 (i.e. 58 x 6.25 / 5). Is there a rational explanation for where the sugar is going? I'm as careful with the hydrometer as I can be, and getting...

    Beer Rescue

So, I was brewing what was supposed to be an Imperial IPA a couple of months back and in a moment of madness, threw in all the DME I had on hand in an improvised attempt at pushing the envelope. Lesson learned: don't improvise. Anyway, OG measured at 1.125, but I only had WLP001 Cali Ale...

Pharmacy iodine for testing for starch

Planning my first mash tomorrow and I went to the pharmacy to get some iodine so that I could test for remaining starches after conversion. There were two alternatives - tincture of iodine (2% iodine)? and 'decolorized' iodine. Are either of these good?

So ... Is this what i think it is?

Had a longer than usual lag time, later noticed the yeast was past date (lesson learned), and when kreusen fell a few days later I appear to have my first infection. Is it what I think it is and what should I do next? Chuck it out and brew again?

Yet another "OG lower than expected" thread

Steeped 1lb Crystal 40 at 155 for 30 minutes, removed grain, took to the boil, added and dissolved 8lbs light DME. Hopville says OG should be 1.076, I measured 1.054 at 70 degrees = 1.055 at 60. Low OG appears to be a fairly common topic here and the usual explanation seems to be top-up water...

    Treadmill/Vibration

I'm thinking of moving fermentation from the kitchen to "my room" which, naturally enough for "my room", is full of SWMBO's stuff, including her treadmill, which would be 15 feet or so from the fv. Could 45 minutes of treadmill-stomping every couple of days produce enough vibration to upset...

    Batch 2 - (I)IPA single hop suggestions/schedule?

I bottled my first batch (an extract kit) two days ago and decided to help pass the time before I get to finally start drinking it by brewing another batch. I want develop and use my own recipe as I figure that will help with the learning process. To that end, I would like to keep it simple -...
