    Should I Dry Hop?

Hi everyone, Have a couple of questions. I'm brewing the Brewers Best HopNog 2011 and was wondering if I should secondary and dry hop this one? I like pretty hoppy beers, and want to get an idea of what to expect if I do dry hop this (I've never tried dry-hopping). So, if I should....how...

    Please help with starter!!

Okay, this is my second time making a starter but not sure if this is right. Here's what's going on (did this 2 days ago): I boiled 650ml of water, along with 1/2 cup of DME. By the time I was done with a 15 min boil I only had about 400 ml of wort. I cooled, and added the liquid yeast...

    Making a starter/high OG

Hi everyone, I'm getting ready to make a starter (have 1000ml flask) for a beer with an OG of 1.082 (extract kit). Just wanted to check and see if a 1000ml is large enough for a high gravity beer like this. If not, any advice (besides buying a larger flask). Thanks!

    Wow! Second Bottle Bomb

So I just had my second bottle bomb from the same batch! The first bomb happened over a month ago, and all of a sudden one exploded tonight. I had figured that it was just one bad bottle, but this one completely exploded. Can't figure out why this is happening. It was definitely done fermenting...

Why does this batch take longer?

Hi Everyone, I have a question that I'm curious about. One of the batches I brewed was the Houblonmonstre Tripel IPA from NB which took about 10 weeks (NB says the "ready" time is 2 months) and now I'm brewing the regular Tripel which NB says ready time is 3 months. Aside from the additional...

No idea how to make own recipe

Hi Everyone, I'm currently on my 6th extract batch and am starting to think about creating my own recipe. Maybe I need to read more, but I really have no idea where to even start. I'm sure this is way outside guidelines of a certain style, but thought this might be a good way to learn. Here's...

    First Bottle Bomb...What to do?

Hey everyone, Well, I just had my first bottle bomb, and I'm not sure why. I bottled my Houblonmonstre Tripel/IPA about 10 days ago. I tried one a couple of days ago and it was very carbonated already, and delicious. I used the instructions from NB that said to use 5/8 cup of sugar + 1oz...

Using yeast cake for Belgian Tripel?

Hi Everyone, I've read about people using the yeast cake from a previous brew and then racking their new brew on top. I'm currently brewing a Patersbier from NB which uses the Wyeast 3787. I'm thinking of brewing up a Belgian Tripel next and was wondering if I can use the old yeast cake...

    Very confused about bottle priming!

Hey Everyone, I've looked all over this board, and it seems the more I read, the more confused I become. I just started reading about things like the bottle priming calculator on tastybrew.com, which is confusing me even more. For my first two brews, I've used extract kits from NB. Both kits...

    Houblonmonstre Tripel IPA

Hey everyone, I'm currently on my third batch of brew and have a couple of questions. The first two batches have come out okay...drinkable, yes...but nothing I can say I'm proud of yet. So far, both (German Hefe and Belgian White) have tasted very "thin." The flavor is pretty good but there...

    OG way off

Hey everyone, I just got done brewing a Houblonmonstre IPA from Northern Brewers, and this is the second batch in a row where my OG is way off from where it should be. Last time, I didn't think I aerated the wort well enough, but this time I aerated the wort really well but still came in well...

    Photos of 1st Brew

Hi everyone, This is such a great site! There's so much great info and advice, and even though I haven't posted much yet, I really appreciate all the tips that this site gives. Here's a couple of photos of my first batch: It's a Bavarian Hefeweizen extract kit from Northern Brewers. I...

    Temperature on Hefe

Hello, This is my very first post...but most likely not my last. I am a beginner, and just started my first batch on Monday. Here's what I'm running into: I am brewing a Bavarian Hefeweizen from an extract kit I bought. I am using the stick on thermometers and for the first couple of days...
