Is there a general rule for using a blowoff tube at certain original gravities? I have a 1.060 og and was wondering if it would be a good idea. Also, does it depend on the beer and yeast?
I have 7 lbs of LME as well as another of crystal. I'm trying for an amber ale with 5 gallons. Should I be looking at adding some more fermentables? I was hoping to get at least 5% abv. in this batch. It just seems a little low to me.

Is it biting off more than I can chew if I go the half extract and half grain route? Also, any recommended recipies?
