    Brew House

Has anyone tried any of these kits? It looks like they come with a premade 15 liters of wort. You just add the amount of water you want. You can also reboil and add more hopps etc.

    Tap water

When I did my first batch, I just used tap water and I didn't boil it. My water tastes good and I have my own well so there is no chlorine in there. I just bottled it yesterday. Now I read that you should boil it first. Is the need to boil it because of city water and what they put in it...

    Old DME/Crystal Malt

I bought a home brew kit on ebay which had a carboy, siphons, bucket etc. It also had an old kit of ingredients to make amber beer (dated 2002) I threw the yeast out. Here is what it came with: 3 lb Amber DME 2lb light DME 2cups Crystal Malt 3/4 cup priming sugar There was no hops so...

    Sugar syrup

My recipe calls for 3/4 cup of corn sugar in 1/2 cup water then boil. This doesn't seem like much water to me. Should I follow the recipe or use more water? I will be bottling today. I just got everything sanatized. :mug:

    Spigot on Fermentor?

I was thinking of putting a spigot on my fermenting bucket. My thinking is that I wouldn't have to siphon to the secondary, I could just put a hose on the spigot and run it to the secondary. The spigot would be 1 1/2 inches from the bottom so you wouldn't disturb any of the sludge on the...

    Distilled water?

Would distilled water be good for brewing? It is a lot cheaper then bottled water. 4 gal. at wallmart is $2.56. And 4 gal should be all you need as you could have 1 1/2 gal of hot wort to add to the 4 cooled distilled gal.

    Dump it?

Here is my current depressing situation: I first started Friday the 3rd. I noticed that it never bubbled in the fermentor. With the advise of several here I added more yeast on Friday afternoon. Walker was nice enough to send me some yeast, alltho' I didn't end up using it because I found...

    Hydrometer

How do you take a reading? Just stick it right in the wort?

    Failure..

I brewed last friday. It still isn't bubbling. I made a mistake with the yeast putting it in cool water instead of warm. Do I dare add more yeast (I would have to order some). Or am I just screwed and thirsty?

    Yeast problem?

Yesterday, before putting in the yeast I let it sit out in a bowl for 15 minutes before putting it in. Problem is, I thought it was supposed to be 38-40 deg F. It actually read Celsius. So I put it in colder water. I didn't take the temp of the water but I'm guessing it was probably about...

    Fermentation in closet?

I added the yeast and it should ferment soon. I put it in my closet. Does it put off a lot of smell? If it does I'm sure my wife will have me move it soon.

    Amount of wort

I was just thinking that if you started with just 5 gallons of wort, by the time you filled the bottles there would be quite a bit less then that because you dont use the bottom 1"? What do you actually end up with? How many 12 oz bottles?

    Fermentation Temp.

I will be adding the yeast shortly. Just wondering what the ideal temp. should be to ferment?

    Grolsch bottles

When I bought my kit it came with 23 grolsch 16 oz bottles. They smell clean, but look like some of them are used. Can I just wash them with dish soap? Or should I use a one step sanitizer and cleanser? Also, after they are clean do they need to be completley dry or do you just wash em...

    Kettle

Iv'e read here that a stainless steel pot is best. I have a big kettle (black with white specs) I think it is coated with teflon not sure. Would this work ok?

    Secondary

In the kit I have it just says to mix the sugar mixture with the beer into a bottling bucket. From there it goes straight to the bottles where it should age 3 weeks before you can drink it. Is this what I should do? Can I just leave it in a secondary for 3 weeks and then bottle?

    Hydrometer?

Hi. I just got my brewing kit a couple days ago. I bought some ingredients from true brew (Red Ale). Anyway, while reading the directions it said to take a hydrometer reading for beginning specifec gravity before putting in the yeast. They said this is optional. What are the bennefits of...
