Bottle priming with dark brown sugar

Would there be any benefit or problem with using dark brown sugar as a primer for bottling? Would this tend to change anything in the final taste? or color? does anyone do this? would this be a dumb thing to do?

Want to bottle a porter but off odor...

This is my second batch. Its been in the secondary for about 3 weeks (after 2in the primary) and is ready to bottle. The problem is there is a bit of an off odor. The odor seems to be getting better while sitting in the secondary but is still there. It's sort of a swampy smell for lack of a...

    Want to brew tomorrow but...

I have an oatmeal stout mini-mash kit from AHS that came with the suggested liquid yeast. I was hoping to brew tomorrow but now after reading here I am concerned that I should do the whole starter thing with the liquid yeast which will take time and prevent me from brewing tomorrow. Do you think...

How many FG points does priming sugar generally add?

Just bottled my first (an American Pale Ale). I forgot to take a FG reading prior to transfering into the bottling bucket and adding the priming sugar. So when I did check it obviously it was higher than at the last check 2 days before (went from 1.012 to 1.014). I'm just wondering if .002...

    Dry hopping question...

I've have a pale ale in the primary for one week now. the kit instructions recommended transferring to a secondary and dry hopping at that time. After spending time on this site i have decided not to rack to a secondary but leave it in the primary for 3 weeks then bottle. My questions are...

    Oxygen absorbing caps???...

Bought a bag of caps and found out they are the oxygen absorbing type. Is this a good thing? Don't the yeasties need a little O2 to start the bottle fermentation too?. If they are bad then what are they for? I have an american pale ale and a porter in primaries right now. Don't know...

Is a blow off hose necessary in a 6 gal carboy...

I have just put a porter into a 6 gal glass carboy for its primary fermentation (my second batch ever). Just wondering if people think there is enough head room that a three piece air lock would be ok or do i need to do the blow off hose thing. I have the blow off hose set up but i'm...

1st batch, new kit, broken hydrometer...

So.. I decided to start homebrewing and really have put the time in to research/reading prior to buying supplies, a recipe kit and getting underway. Unfortunately my order was delayed in the mail and when it arrived the box was a bit beat up. Everything in the kit sans the hydrometer was intact...
