I have a bunch of hops that I planted along a 5 ft high dog fence and was wondering if it is probable that dogs would eat the hop cones right off of the plant? None of the bines are entwined in the fence yet so I still have time to rig a trellis up but am wondering if it is necessary.

My hop rhizomes are in their third year and I have yet to prune the root balls. I have read that some people dig up the rhizomes to cut back the roots so they do not expand too vigorously. I was just hoping for some tips on pruning the roots. How long should I leave the roots?
