Corn Cobs instead of Rice Hulls?

Can one use roughly ground corn cobs instead of rice hulls to loosen the mash? We do not grow rice in this country and importing it is costly (like bringing in a container of bubblewrap!). Corn grows wild here.

    Upscaling 1 gal recipes

I read somewhere that very small recipes need adjusting when upscaling, i.e. from 1gal to 12gal. Something to do with the hop or malt ratios. Any input on this? I have a 12gal setup and want to do 1gal BIAB to test recipes. Someone on the forum said "In theory, theory and practice are the...

    Add Water After boil?

Hi, I have a 45L fermenter and a 50L BK. Have just started AG and the first few batches have been 35L because I'm scared of boil-overs. For a 44L batch I would need a pre-boil volume of around 47L which is a no-no. Question: can I do a 40L boil (using full grain bill) and add boiling make-up...

    Vigorous ferment but low FG

BTW I did search the forum before asking this newbie question;) My first AG IPA brewed in the garage was utter chaos. Working alone, the odd cell phone crisis, A.D.D. kicking in etc. OG was 1055. Ferment went vigorously for 2 weeks. Now has slowed to 10 minutes between "burps". Took...

Add CO2 to secondary before decanting

Any merit in filling carboy (secondary) with CO2 to purge oxygen? Aeration seems to be the biggest danger in secondary fermentation so surely this could eliminate the potential problem

This time I'm sure I screwed up!

This is the last of 4 batches in a Coopers kit before trying AG (an APA fermenting now). It is a Mexican Cerveza and this is the most care I've taken so far; sanitised everything, sterilized bottles in oven, etc. (maybe that's a clue because it tastes like oven-cleaner chemical!). This is not...

Adding water via mash tun manifold?

Is there any reason not to use quick connectors to add strike water via the mash tun outlet and manifold? After the mash you could close the valve(!) and move the hose to the boil kettle. I'm a noob so feel free to L.O.L.

    Boiling Water Hazard

Hi, this topic must have come up but I can't find it. About to build a 3-tier stand and am concerned about the safety aspect of boiling 12gal of water 6 feet up. I hate it when a boiling pot tips and warms the back of my neck. How do I secure the vessel? It will be either a 50liter (12gal?) pot...

Pot size for cooler mash tun

Sorry, my heading is misleading. Pot is to feed the Coleman. Hi, I'm about to try all grain brewing after a couple successful batches of Lager using a Coopers DIY kit. The mash tun is a +/- 45qt Coleman cooler. I can buy a 45~50 liter aluminum pot, but just realized this could be a handful...
