    Ferm Cap int the primary

I'm expecting some monumental action on my next brew. I've heard I can use ferm cap in the primary (I wont be using a secondary). Should I use it? How much should I use? And should I still use a blow of tube?

    Taking the FG

Ok, My Belgian Abby Ale have been sitting in the fermeter for over a month now, it's probably closer to two (I've learned how to relax about it a bit more). I'll be taking an FG soon but there beer is clear at the top half of the fermenter and a bit more cloudy at the bottom. Will where I pull...

    Secondary for Imperial Stout

You guys say not to bother with the instructions. Do you think I should use a secondary?

    Primary Fermenter blow off

I have a pail as my primary fermenter. It's got a tiny hole for the airlock. Am I going to be able to attach a suitable blow off on this? I intend to make an Imperial Stout which I hear can get a bit... frisky. I have a better bottle as my secondary. Should I swap them around for the purposes...

    Bottle bomb time frame

I've just bottled my first batch. How long do you think until I'm in the clear regarding bottle bombs? Temp range 70-75dF I'm going to have to explain this phenomenon to SWMBO. She's from Texas and yes, she keeps a gun next to the bed. I'm worried I'll wake up to her thinking a gun fight has...

    Transporting Primary/secondary fermenter

I'm itching to brew up a bad a$$ imperial stout, but we're looking to move house asap. I'm worried about being half way through fermentation and having to move my fermenter. I'd have to put it into my car and drive to the new home and put it back in the bathtub :) How much damage would I...

Does more time in the fermenter mean less time conditioning?

The title says it all I guess but, does more time in the primary or secondary fermenter mean less time bottle conditioning? I appreciate the beer will need to to carbonate. Just wondering. TFI Friday! :mug:

    Cold crash

All going well, I'm going to bottle my first proper batch on Saturday. It's a Belgian Abbey Ale. http://www.defalcos.com/virtuemart.html?page=shop.product_details&flypage=flypage.tpl&category_id=105&product_id=1668 If I get the FG I'm after this evening, I could throw it in the fridge...

    Bottling pail

I need a vessel for bottling. I intend to use a 5 gallon water bottle from the dispenser at work. It's grade 7 plastic, but it should be safe for bottling purposes shouldn't it? I hope to have the process complete in an hour or two.

Darn it! Canned Extract boiled for an hour.

I've just figured out I wasn't supposed to boil my Coopers IPA extract for an hour. It didn't give a time on the instructions :( It's certainly turned out darker than I expected. Here's hoping I haven't affected the taste too much. Lesson learned.

Info Required: Bayou Classic SP1 Jet Cooker

I've bought a Bayou Classic SP1 Jet Cooker but the flame spreader (the movable circular disc that should be above the flame http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0002913MI/?tag=skimlinks_replacement-20) hasn't been placed correctly. It's sitting flush with the end of the nozzle. Does anyone know what...

    Addition to Coopers IPA

Hi folks, I'd just like my mind put at rest on this one. I asked my LHBS about the recommended extra dextrose to Coopers IPA. They gave me a pound of Corn Syrup Solids to add to the boil and a standard weight (I can't remember the exact weight just now) of dextrose for priming. Does this sound...

    cooling wort

I'd appreciate a couple of comments on the idea of using ice in milk cartons to cool wort. They would of course be sanitized, and I would suspend them somehow to stop the neck of the milk carton from submerging. Just an idea, what do you guys think?

    Howdy

A Scotsman living in Texas. The wife bought me a Mr Brew kit last month. Managed to make two horrendous batches with it, but I've bought some reasonable equipment , some fresh ingredients and currently brewing a Belgian Abby Ale. I would really like to get decent at this, wish me luck.
