    Analyze my recipe please

This is going to be my first batch of brew with steeping grains that I’ve done and I’d like a bit of feedback. It’s supposed to be an American Pale Ale kit that I ordered off of Northern Brewer but I tweaked it a bit to balance it out. 6 lbs Pilsen LME 3 lbs Light DME 0.5 lbs Carapils 0.5...

    Pre-crushed grain stability

I'm going to be doing my first brew with steeping grains this coming Saturday and I'm wondering how well my pre-crushed grains are going to hold up. I ordered them through Northern Brewer...they were shipped yesterday and are due to arrive tomorrow. I was told a while back that having your...

    Hop switch????

Cool...so if I do substitute the cascade with centennial does this hop schedule look decent enough? I would love to get some simcoe thrown in there either to replace something or just as an addition but I can't find them locally.

    Hop switch????

I'm getting ready to do a partial mash for the first time and found a recipe for a IIPA that lists this hop schedule: 1 oz. Nugget (60) 1 oz. Glacier (15) 1 oz. Cascade (10) 0.5 oz. Cascade (2) 0.5 oz. Sterling (2) Dry hopped with 0.5 oz each of Sterling and Cascade My question is...

    Extract potential values of grains

Does anyone know where I can find a chart/table/listing of the extract potential range for individual grains? I'm mainly looking for the SG values if at all possible.

    First partial mash

Alright, I feel as though I'm ready to try a partial mash and was thinking about doing a spiced brown ale. Any ideas as far as recipes...I really enjoy a smooth brown with some body.

    Success!

We ended up putting about 500mL of each tea in the approx. 2.5 gallons of the mead once we split it. It's very subtle but not absent. In retrospect I might have doubled it up and cut back on the ginger.

    Success!

I'm geeked...I just bottled a ginger mead that a buddy and I made. We split the batch in two and with one having chai tea and another having a basic english grey tea added and I must say that they both taste amazing. We hit our target gravities dead on and were shocked at how they both...

    Characteristics of wild bacteria/yeast

Awesome...thanks for the info. Definitely going to pick up the Wild Brews book.

    Characteristics of wild bacteria/yeast

I'm curious as to the different characteristics in both smell and taste of brett, lactobacillus and pediococcus bacterias...sorry if my spelling is off. I'm most familiar with brett but would like as much info as possible. Another thing I've noticed discussed is the difference in...

    Mead

I'm still fairly new to this site but not to good brews. Recently I started getting into meads and just this past Saturday brewed my first one...so anyway, I finally got my hand on an '04 bottle of Apis Poltorak Jadwiga and damn if that isn't one fine mead. I know that it's very highly...

    First Mead

You know what, after looking at it more carefully you're right. It is reading 1.130 and not 1.300. I completely read it wrong and kind of feel like a ******* right now. Oh well...thanks for bringing that to my attention.

    First Mead

Thanks for all of the feedback. I stirred and aerated the hell out of the must until I was positive it was all dissolved and then I pitched. Oh well, we'll see how this goes...it's fermenting like crazy right now. The recipe calls for primary at about 1.5 months and then secondary for about...

    First Mead

Alright, I'm pretty much just looking for some general feedback here. I brewed up my first mead this morning using a recipe out of Papazian's book. The only difference between his recipe and what I did was I used 15 lbs. of honey instead of the listed 17.5 lbs. His target OG is 1.126-1.130...

    Repitch?

Alright...I took a reading and looks as though I just missed the fermentation. My gravity is now reading 1.020. Thanks again everyone.

    Repitch?

Didn't even think to take a gravity reading. I'll be sure to do that when I get off of work. Thanks to those who responded with the info and big thanks for the link to the forum thread. By the way, I used Windsor Ale yeast. My SG was 1.043.

    Repitch?

I brewed a porter this past Monday and as of this morning, there is still no visible activity going on in my airlock. I figured I should just go ahead and repitch with a new packet of yeast. Thoughts? My temp has been at a steady 68-72. Any ideas other than a bad yeast packet?

    Newbie here

Just wanted to say hello and that I hope to find a bunch of helpful information here. I'm brand new to homebrewing...my first batch is bottled right now waiting to be tasted. I'm still in the all-extract phase and ultimately want to move to grain and extract and then to all-grain brewing...
