    Pictures of hop plants

I look forward to the arrival of those creepy little buggers. It means any aphids will quickly get turned into black and red friendly bugs.

Does "topping" hops help them bush-out?

From my experience, if a bine breaks or gets cut, it will use the next lowest side shoot as it's new main stem. So you still get linear growth, but at a 90 degree angle. The other side shoots seem mostly unaffected.

I'll reiterate - Don't worry about the measurements. Look at the grain. Are the hulls cracked? Are the grains partially broken? That is way more effective than some arbitrary number for the gap. Only you know your system and your process.

I was of the mindset that I wanted to squeeze every available ml out of the space in the basket. As it was, I was too close to the handle holes during recirculation. Who would think that the metal would warp and drop out so easily?

Mine didn't even make it to the first legs. It had only come up a couple inches, so being heavy in the water, one can assume I hadn't accelerated it very fast.

Yeah, like the arch in a dam. I'll try that next time, cause the extra hour+ of running around, problem solving, cleaning, and lack of any meaningful sparge was a bit of a downer.

I haven't found any literature that claims directionality, but I would assume that having the screen angled with the "bulge" down seems right. I have a hard time imagining the thing slipping loose, but apparently 25 lbs of grain (65l version) plus water was a bit too much for it. Seems...

Kegland flow control QD - foaming and low pressure

No, I disassembled them and had a good look to see if there was anything that could block or potentially leak. It was just carbonated water, so I'd have a hard time imagining anything getting in the way. My first thought was that I had a bad hose connection, so I took some pliers and tried...

Doing my first real batch now, and while lifting the malt pipe, the bottom screen came right out the bottom. So now I get to figure out how to separate and transfer everything. In the meantime, a nice long mash, it is... JFC. edit - at least the bottom screen seems to have stopped the grains...

Kegland flow control QD - foaming and low pressure

Yes, huge bubbles starting at the disconnect, like sometimes it gets close to half gas/half liquid. No problems with other regular disconnects. I've also tried multiple kegs, so the problem appears to be isolated.

Kegland flow control QD - foaming and low pressure

Bumping this because I'm having a similar issue with these new version connects. I installed one on a seltzer tap a couple days ago, and was super stoked. No line breakout, good control, worked great. Next day I poured a glass, and it was all fits and spurts. Something is happening inside the...

Mine came with the target temp set to 0c/32f, so no problem there. I filled it anyway, though. Definitely read through the whole thread before turning anything on.

I just received and built my new 220v, 65l gen 4. I thought it was supposed to have a detachable cord, but this one goes straight through the body with a strain relief grommet. Is this "feature" particular to this model? Otherwise, I'm excitedly awaiting an extension cord so I can fire this...

    Re-Fermenting Oxidized Brew

Distill it, legal here in NZ. Not sure whether it is for you though. Technically illegal, but the more obvious hurdle would be the practicality of it.

    Re-Fermenting Oxidized Brew

Last fall I made a few gallons of Mead. It was my first time doing anything like it, and the final product left a lot to be desired. The two big faults are: 1 - Flat, and stale tasting. Almost assuredly from too much oxygen getting in post-fermentation. 2 - Leftover unused nutrients. I can...
