    iSpindle - DIY Electronic Hydrometer

Just me yammering to myself again. I was able to test the current of each board today, and found the following during deep sleep. Adafruit Feather Huzzah (the one with the the built-in USB charging):~13mA Adafruit Huzzah ESP8266 Breakout Board: 3.5mA SNCT D1 Mini(Amazon.com: SNCT D1 Mini...

    iSpindle - DIY Electronic Hydrometer

I rigged up a second iSpindel circuit on a breadboard and got the same power consumption rates (as measured by the drop in voltage over time). I swapped out the Adafruit Feather ESP8266 and put in their ESP8266 breakout board (no USB circuitry or anyting) and it is consuming less than half the...

    iSpindle - DIY Electronic Hydrometer

Another 2.5 years later, and it's in its first batch of beer. Have I really had this thing sitting around for almost 5 years? F**k. The battery life is abysmal on my setup (Adafruit Huzzah for an integrated charger). After this batch is done I'll likely take it apart to measure the current draw...

Look up ESPTool. It is a python program that you run through Terminal.

    iSpindle - DIY Electronic Hydrometer

Well, having started this project nearly two years ago, I finally picked up a 3D printer to start iterating a carrier to hold the Adafruit Huzzah and perfboard. After 10 revisions I got the specs and shape nailed down, so I set to work soldering everything together. However, after plugging in...

    Omega Yeast HotHead Temps?

The Come and Brew It podcast episode with the founder of Omega had some really good information about the temperature ranges of that yeast. It is worth listening to, but by now you are probably so far through fermentation that the temperature change won't alter the flavor all that much...

    water bottle as secondary??

The theory is that the PET plastic used for our beloved fermenters has a higher resistance to degradation by alcohol than the HDPE used for water bottles. Looking the same ≠ being the same. That being said, I did ferment a Brett saison in one without any impact on flavor.

    How important is cold crashing?

Don't worry so much, you'll be fine without the tape. Your fermenter has a nice, thick layer of co2, which is denser than oxygen.

Buying Wyeast: How Old Is Too Old?

I did do a single step starter that built up some yeast. I just pitched it, so we'll see how it goes. I'm also going to shoot the LHBS an email and see whats up.

Buying Wyeast: How Old Is Too Old?

I picked up some ingredients from the LHBS the other day. On brew day I smacked the snack pack, shook it, and got on with brewing. At the end of the day, despite the house being 78* the pack had not inflated. I checked the date, and it was manufactured January 5th; I bought it on July 3rd. So...

[email protected], no need of RPI and Arduino.

EDIT I managed to wipe the board with esptool and upload a fresh install of v3, and all is well. Would've preferred to spend my evening in other ways, but such is brew life. --- Well, I've neglected my BrewPiLess and fermentation chamber for quite a while, and I think it may be suffering. The...

    Check EVERYTHING for CO2 leaks

After having two CO2 tanks mysteriously go empty over the course of months, I finally sprayed everything down with Star San. Previously, I had checked all of the connections for leaks. However, this time I found the leak in the form of a microscopic hole in the middle of one of the manifold...

    First time chocolate stout

I'm willing to bet that the wort didn't get mixed well enough after you topped off, meaning that the fender wort is at the bottom and the watered down wort is at the top. It'll even out as it ferments.

Building a small fermentation chamber out of a minifridge

I used that setup for quite a while. Cut the door shelves off with a utility knife and Bob's your uncle. You do have to leave the outer edge of the panel the door shelves are molded into in tact though so that the door seals properly.

Could it have fermented in only 11 days?

Whatever floats your boat. My pale ale tastes best, and won a blue ribbon 8 weeks after brew day so I see no point in pushing most beers through that quickly (except a blonde Ale or English bitter). I usually aim to get beers into a keg about a month after brew day, and I don't bother with a...

[email protected], no need of RPI and Arduino.

Has anyone else encountered intermittent data issues? My sensors have been spotty since last night (when I did open the chamber to pull a gravity reading). I haven't yet checked the wiring connections because it is hot as hell in the garage right now, but has anyone experienced any issues like...

    iSpindle - DIY Electronic Hydrometer

Yes, I prototyped it and got it up and going. The tilt sensor got power, but I didn't see it updating the tilt reading on the webpage. I haven't had a chance to look into it more though.

[email protected], no need of RPI and Arduino.

Well, my first fermentation is under way with the Huzzah BrewPiLess. So far so good, except that my 25˚F ramp over 18 hours seems to be faster than the beer can adjust. Is there any way to allow a greater delta between the chamber temperature and the beer temp? It isn't really a big deal...

Thanks, I'll update that this evening.
