Pitch a starter after 10 days??

Wyeast Bavarian Lager, no starter :drunk: (I know better now). The OG was 1.056 and at 8 days it was 1.062, probably a little variation due to temps and mixing. Now there is a nice layer of bubbles on the surface which leads me to believe its fermenting, because it doesn't look like mold. I'll...

Pitch a starter after 10 days??

I have a bock that has shown no signs of fermentation, confirmed by the hydrometer. I ordered a yeast starter kit and intended on making a starter and pitching. So I get all the stuff in today and go to take a look in the fridge and see signs (physical) of fermentation. Should I continue with...

Is a Carboy Cover or Shirt Needed to Keep Light Away?

If you don't want your carboy wearing your best TOOL/ACDC shirt :rockin: , try this. We use the cardboard piece that it ships with. It fits perfect and probably blocks more light that a t-tshirt. They are also located on a shelf that doesn't get much light.

    Name That Infection

That's refreshing, we do sanitize everything. I guess my concern is that fermentation has not started and its been in the fermenter for 9 days. We have more yeast coming tomorrow and I'm going to make a starter. Guess the nerves are getting to me because its been so long with no activity...

What's up with the bottle brush?

The best tip I ever received was bottling in the dishwasher. We normally give the bottles a quick brush and then soak them in Starsan. After that we put them in the dishwasher upside down (to let the rest of the sanitizer drain) and bottle right there on the dishwasher door. This method...

    Name That Infection

I would be interested in finding out what that is as well. I have the beginings of what looks to be very similar in a bock that had problems starting fermentation. It actually started right after I took a hydro reading, think I might have introduced something when I broke the airlock seal.

    First lager attempt pitching method??

I really didn't research the starter advantages enough and because me and my brother never had any problems with the ales. Next time I will make a starter. When you say "climatized"; is this just chilling the starter to the same temp and the wort to avoid shock? Also at what point would we...

    First lager attempt pitching method??

I don't have a stone to use, is there another method. Could I just shake the hell out of it? Also, I'm not sure that's the problem because I only did a partial boil and ran the wort through a strainer/funnel combo. I've just read so many different possibilities of things that could go wrong...

    First lager attempt pitching method??

First time to brew a lager.... and a couple of questions have arisen. The yeast(Wyeast Bavarian Lager) smelled funny(bad) when opened and the pack didn't really swell like previous ones. I had heard that some lager yeasts produce an odor usually sulfurous so I didn't really sweat the smell. Its...

    northern brewer ag kits

I had the opposite experience. One of my extract kits was shipped with the wrong hops... presumably due to the shortage. I called and they said it must have been one of these that was previously packaged. They send the correct hops right away no questions asked and with a great attitude.

How do you smack a smack pack?

I've never had a problem holding it in one hand and smacking it with the other. I think maybe holding it in your hand keeps the pack from moving too much as opposed to laying it on the counter. Also when you hit it think Bruce Lee....
