    Priming sugar

Thanks for the reply. Did you substitute the cane sugar 1:1 for the corn sugar. I don't want bottle bombs

    Priming sugar

I'm getting ready to bottle a batch of Belgian dubbel. My kit did not include priming sugar. I meant to order some but it slipped my mind and now 3 months later and ready to bottle and I realize I needed some. I have a bag of Muntons plain light dry malt that's been in my refrigerator for a...

    Bad Bugs vs Lager Yeast

I made 5 gallons of extract pilsner lager last Wednesday night. The Wyeast activator pack I had didn't swell right away so I put a solid stopper on the carboy thinking the smack pack would swell by the next day, it didn't. Three days later the yeast was ready but in the mean time the stopper...

    Alcohol in my root beer???

This thread sort of went off on a tangent so I'm going to try bring it back. My son and I just made a case of cola from an extract kit I got from my homebrew supplier. I used Red Star champagne yeast also and bottled in glass beer bottles. It's been carbonating for a few weeks and is getting...

    Yeast pack warm

OK, took the pack out of the fridge at 7:00am, smacked the pack and made sure the pack was broke open. Here it is at midnight and the package, as far as I can tell, has not gotten any bigger. No noticeable swelling. I'll wait until the morning but I have a feeling I'm screwed.

    Yeast pack warm

OK, I can start the pack an see if it inflates, If it doesn't I can order more dry yeast before I brew. Now that I have a contingency plan, what are the chances of the yeast going bad after 2-3 days at room temp. Worst case what are the chances of survivability if the temps got real high...

    Yeast pack warm

I'm not ready to brew today. How long will it keep after smacking? If I wait until brew day and it doesn't activate then I have 5 gallons of wort and no yeast.

    Yeast pack warm

I inadvertently ordered liquid yeast with my last extract kit order. I normally order dry yeast and I'm used to handling and using dry yeast. When the order got to my door it I opened the insulated envelope containing the yeast and the cold pack and the inside of the envelope was room temp...

    Spill my yeast

Thanks for the reply and reassurance. I was thinking the yeast will propagate until there are not enough fermentable sugars to go around. On a plus side this batch, my first lager, and my 9th batch ever, I didn't have a boil over.:rockin:

    Spill my yeast

I was getting ready to pitch my dry yeast into the primary carboy. I cut the top off the yeast packet and set it upright to the side. While I was taking the bung off the carboy the yeast packet fell over. I lost maybe an 1/8 to a 1/5 of the yeast. What's going to happen? This is a lager...

Super Bowl (Brew) Day... whatcha brewing?

Yellow Dog Pale Ale from The Home Brewery. I've heard good reviews and thought I'd give it a try. Trying to reduce my total cycle time for an extract brew session.

    Too cold for ale fermentation?

I've been brewing for about 6 months now, ales only. I just bottled an extract kit London Porter, my second London Porter kit. All my fermentations have been in the back room of my house. I have a digital thermometer with probe against the outside of the carboy and prior to this last batch...

    Fast cooling with contained ice

That's what I was curious about. Even though I gave the bottle a star san bath before immersing? My copper wort chiller isn't a 20 minute operation, I was trying to speed things up.

    Fast cooling with contained ice

What would be some inherent problems with putting a 2 liter bottle of ice in the wort while cooling. I have some 2 liter coke bottles in the freezer that I plan to use with my lagering fermentation cooler. I dropped one in a solution of star san for a bit and put it in the cooling wort, while...

    Brew Night from Hell

Tweaker, Good to see another shooter in the group. I need to put some HP's in that mag I've been carrying those FMJ target loads for awhile now and I need to switch out to expandable rounds for the collateral damage reasons. I used to always think I needed the extra punch thru for a variety...

    Brew Night from Hell

I live out in the county so screw the neighbors.(I'm a good neighbor BTW) No snake loads--just FMJ, same thing as my carry load. Now the wife is afraid to go outside. Maybe that's a good thing?

    Brew Night from Hell

Great suggestions. I'll have to come up with something good and post a pic of the label.

Do you guys "code" your beer-caps to know what is inside months later?

I label my beers with 3" Avery labels. Part of the fun is naming your batch and creating the labels. I give a lot of bottles of my beer away to friends and they get a kick out of the labels. I use Photoshop and a PDF Avery template. They labels come 6 to a sheet and I stick them into the...

    Brew Night from Hell

Due to family circumstances(softball, birthdays, etc.) I wasn't able to brew last weekend so I waited in, anticipation, for Friday after work to start my brew. I set up my brew kettle and propane cooker on the back patio and filled the pot to 5 gallons. The burners are lit and the batch is...
