there's a cockroach in my blow-off water... that sounds funny.

So I brewed an IPA two weekends ago and setup a blow-off tube in a bucket of water/starsan. The first week, I was keeping a pretty close eye on everything that was going on. But after things settled down a bit, I stopped paying much attention to it. When I peeked in yesterday, there was a...

maybe someone could come up with a "first time all-grain troubleshooting" (sticky) thread and base it on all the questions that most frequently come up in this forum.

Can I use a single infusion mash for this recipe?

i don't know... as i said in the original post, this is my third all-grain. this is also ONLY my 8th beer. so i'm very new to everything. i've been studying the BJCP guidelines and (casually) researching different malts (base and specialty). for some reason, i no longer like the idea of...

Can I use a single infusion mash for this recipe?

How does this revision sound? 7# American Vienna 2# Crystal 90 2 oz. Black Patent 12 oz. Chocolate 3# Clover honey (end of boil) 1/2 oz. Chinook (60 min.) 1/2 oz. Chinook (5 min.) I added a pound of crystal and adjusted the BP, chocolate and honey. Suggestions?

Can I use a single infusion mash for this recipe?

well, now this recipe seems all sorts of screwed up. how long would you suggest for the honey? i made a honey porter extract batch a while back and only used a pound of honey (60 min. boil) and it was one of the best beers i've made. didn't notice a honey flavor, but that didn't distract from...

Can I use a single infusion mash for this recipe?

Can I adjust the amounts, with negligible effects to the overall recipe? Is BP high in tannins? I've read about large quantities being very astringent. What about Chocolate?

Can I use a single infusion mash for this recipe?

Honey Porter 7# American Vienna 1# Crystal 90 1# Black Patent 1# Chocolate 3# Clover honey (60 min. boil) 1/2 oz. Chinook (60 min.) 1/2 oz. Chinook (5 min.) My concern is the Vienna. Any thoughts on a single infusion on this one? This would be my third AG, so I'm still new to it all. Thanks...

    All-Grain Tutorial/Nut Brown Ale

YB... tell me if what i'm doing is similar to mashing out. when the 60 minute mash is complete i'm adding 170 degree F water to the MT (to make-up for water lost due to grain absorption), i stir and let it sit for a bit before the vorlauf and first runnings.

    All-Grain Tutorial/Nut Brown Ale

I can't believe I didn't think to do this!! Is this common among other batch spargers? This HAS to decrease the amount of time it takes to come to a boil by quite a bit! On my first AG, I waited until I had both runnings before starting the boil, and it TOOK FOREVER!! Are there any...

First All-Grain... Questions about the hot break.

it was plastic. it came with a removable bottom, but i sealed it without super-awesome-turbo-sticky glue. not sticky, super or turbo enough, i guess. haven't tried it yet. still has secondary and kegging to go!

First All-Grain... Questions about the hot break.

good to know... thanks for all the help! also, as i was dropping my hydrometer through the test cylinder, it somehow broke through the bottom of the cylinder and fell to the floor shattering into little pieces... so i'm not going to be able to know the OG or efficiency (ON MY FIRST...

First All-Grain... Questions about the hot break.

Hey everyone! My first all-grain was a success! So far. We'll have to actually drink the stuff to find out how good it is. The fermentation was extremely active but I was wondering about the chunky stuff. I've never seen chunks like this in any extract batches. The chunks were only...
