    can I get away with...

Again thanks for the advice so far! General consensus seems to be at least extra hops, preferably grain as well. At this stage, I think I'll try the extra hops, and leave steeping some grains for another time, as I'm still a bit of a noob to brewing. My local home brew store sells: Whole Hops...

    can I get away with...

Thanks for the feedback. I'm a little surprised on the comments regarding IPA not being a suitable style to support a higher ABV. I was under the impression though that IPA was originally on the boat from Engerland at quite a high ABV in order to survive the 6 month trip to the East Indies...

    can I get away with...

1 IPA kit beer from Black Rock New Zealand and adding 1.8kg (4lb) LME AND 1kg dextrose with standard kit yeast? Or will the higher alc content kill the yeast? Or will the alc content be so high with 4lb of LME that I should skip the dextrose? Thanks kindly for advice!!

suggestions for simple additions to kit lager?

Thanks for the headsup. I'm not sure what to expect for a final gravity reading, so I'll just watch for when it stands still for 3+ days...

What "overseas" beer is worth drinking?

Another vote for sapporo. And it comes in a huuge, cool can :D. Definitely don't judge Harringtons on that pils. Where in NZ are you? Heard of Twisted Hop?

suggestions for simple additions to kit lager?

So, instead, I bought 500g of creamed clover honey ($3NZ), nuked it till runny in the microwave, poured it into the wort and mixed it all about. OG 1045. Should have a slightly boosted alc content I'm guessing... Perhaps I should have boiled it. But we shall see. I'm just a beginner...

What "overseas" beer is worth drinking?

Imported beers? Get into the NZ micro brews!! We don't know how lucky we are! Try one of those Captain Cook ones, or the Cardrona or something. http://www.wanakabeerworks.co.nz/beers.html Also a litte more mainstream but still kind of off the run-of-the-mill list... get your mitts on...

suggestions for simple additions to kit lager?

Thanks for the tip - wasn't shooting for any particular style, just something tasty. I think I'll give it a go! Should I boil the coriander with the orange-peel, or add it straight to the wort?

suggestions for simple additions to kit lager?

Seen some comments from brewers who are simply boiling some orange peel in 300ml of water for 10 mins and popping extras like that in with their kit lager. Worth doing? Can anyone offer some suggestions of what to boil/add - flavours that might compliment each other? Putting on this...

    help identifying taste

Right, I'll stick a couple in the fridge tonight and drink them the following night and see if it makes a diff. Thanks for that tip. Of course, I guess if it tastes like tonic water, I could just add gin :D.

    help identifying taste

A Bock from a locally produced kit (Black Rock, New Zealand) has a funny feel/flavour I'm having trouble identifying... I could best describe it as a bit like Tonic water, or maybe like Coke from Maccy D's when the post-mix syrup is running a bit low. It didn't start off like that. After...

    Coopers' Draught OG 1034

heh, will do! I'd heard that upping the alc vol by adding more dextrose messed with the flavour something chronic. If I switch to malt (which EVERYONE seems to be recommending), can I simply add more malt for a higher ABV without making a nasty swig? I'd be dead keen on 5% on average.

    Coopers' Draught OG 1034

New Zealand, Christchurch, on the east coast of the South Island. We have some great beers here, but I was inspired to start home brewing because of lack of funds after 1st child born. Now I'm becoming a bit of a HB addict. I can buy a Coopers kit, and dextrose for what amounts to about...

    Coopers' Draught OG 1034

Sheesh, that sent me running to the recycle bucket to check the empty can!! In this one (the draught), it calls for the normal 1kg of sugar. Regarding DME, does one simply replace 1kg of sugar with 1kg malt? Wort temp was about 23c (73f). Still is. Fermentation still hasn't really...

    Coopers' Draught OG 1034

Was just baiting ;) Kind of.

    Coopers' Draught OG 1034

Thanks for those suggestions. Checked hydrometer in water for a true reading of 1000 :( . Also stirred the wort hard out for about a minute to ensure plenty of oxygenation...?? Again, thanks for the ideas tho!

    Coopers' Draught OG 1034

Fairly new to this (4 beers bottled), and been getting some funny things going on on the hydrometer, including FG's of 1012 on a couple of beers done with lager enhancers, etc. But this one's really got me confoozed - an OG of about 1034 on a Coopers' Draught kit with 1kg dextrose and 23 litres...
