All grain kit vs. extract kit?

I know many people prefer allgrain, but I've had extract beer that's superior to many of the Allgrains. A member of our local club brews almost exclusively extract. He creates/formulates his own recipes and makes some of the best home brew I've had. I haven't tasted the twang everybody talks...

Question about starter and priming solutions

I also did a diacetyl rest, brought it up to room temp when i was just above the expected FG. I had approx. 80% of the fermentation complete.

Question about starter and priming solutions

Everything I've read says that the dry yeasts have a lot higher viable yeast cell counts than the liquid. It has nothing to do with lager vs ale strains (as far as I know). However many people recommend using more yeast for fermenting a lower temps. Using the pitch calculator will tell you...

Question about starter and priming solutions

You're using a yeast that is chosen as a lager yeast because it works at the temps you going to ferment at. There is no need to make a starter, it is recommended that you just re hydrate the yeast in water close to the temperature at which it will be pitched. For instance if you will chill your...

    Cheap DIY Fermentor

I'll agree that the price of a bucket from LHBS is reasonable. But haven't found anyone locally that sells a 3.5 gal bucket, when I was looking i couldn't even find one on line. If you are doing a 2.5gal batch neither the 2 gal. nor the 6 or even 7gal buckets that are readily available will...

    Cheap DIY Fermentor

That depends on who you ask;) I'm sure some one will show up to tell you you will die if you use it. Well, guess what your gonna die even if you don't!:D My thoughts are that if they are using it to for food to begin with then it's probably OK and I'm using one just like you describe.

    stir plates

I think your thinking of something like this but I don't think you want to stick that in your starter. :)

    stir plates

I suppose you could but I think a cheap or even DIY stir plate would be cheaper and less effort. A stir plate isn't absolutely needed. Many people just give the vessel an swirl every time they walk by. Also unless you are leaving every thing set up so you can just turn on the O2, every time...

    Cheap DIY Fermentor

3.5 gallon buckets are out there. I got one from a local store called "U-Bake" they make and freeze Crusts, cookies and other things of that type. They sell the used buckets. I believe I paid $2-$3 for it. Filled to the top it's actually 4gal. so I have a decent amount of head space for my...

    must thank SWMBO

I could make 30'x50" work. Use one wall and of course no one else would be able to help on brew day.

    How much time to boil

Well I lifted the burner up by almost 2 inches and gave it another go. It brought 7 gallons to a rolling boil in about 35 min. Still not great but much better. I'll use it that way for now and order a new burner later.

    How much time to boil

I've been looking at the other burners. The ring on mine is welded so I would have to cut it off. I don't think it would effect the function, I believe the ring is simply a safety feature to keep the original pot on. I'll work with it today and see what I can do.

Do bottles have to be dry?

I use Starsan also with the tree and Vinator also. To the original question, if your using starsan, it is designed to be used wet but if it drys during the bottling process you'll be fine. I some times use the dishwasher to hold extra bottles. If the dishwasher is clean(especially if you use the...

    How much time to boil

Well... here's how the new pot sits.... here's the original pot on the unit..... and here's a pic without the pots...... I think tomorrow I'll do some cutting and give it another go. Or maybe just push the support for the burner up a bit, I could bend it or use some shims under...

    How much time to boil

The way the larger pot sits on the burner actually would increase airflow. I'll go take some pics to show what I've got.

    How much time to boil

I received a turkey fryer for Christmas with a 30qt pot. I believe it is 35,000 btu s. I did a test run boiling water in that pot. It took about 30min to bring 6gallons to a boil from probably around 55-60 F . I didn't think that was to bad. Today I picked up a used 40qt pot at a local...

    aluminum pot

If your concern is safety, there is no worry. If it is about how it may affect your beer, well there is some debate but I think most would tell you that your not likely to notice anything. Here is a small bit from John Palmer's How To Brew Metallic Metallic flavors are usually caused by...

    Williams Sonoma selling brew kits

Yes it is as easy as these directions make it to be. Follow those directions and you'll have a good finished product. As you move along you'll start looking to make better beer and have to start with different brewing techniques. You'll obtain lots of different equipment and probably spend a...

    Williams Sonoma selling brew kits

The 1 gallon kit doesn't. The 5 gal. does. I might just try the 1 gal triple, sans the kit. I just need to get something to ferment it in.
